Wilson Picket the soul pioneer best known for the fiery hits "Mustang Sally" and "In The Midnight Hour," died of a heart attack today ...
Spotlight on Wilson Pickett now! That wicked wicked Pickett. Singin' Mustang Sally Oh Yeah, Oh Yeah. RIP
The real gauge of Pickett's greatness is "Land of 1000 Dances." I think I have about every recorded version of that song; including cuts by Chris Kenner, Fats Domino, Rufus Thomas, Cannibal and the Headhunters, Tina Turner, Tom Jones, and Junior Walker and the All-Stars. Even up against compe***ion like that, Pickett's take on the song is the absolute definitive version.
Adios Mr.Pickett.Mustang Sally is one of my all time favorites . Seems like the obits are coming fast and furious lately.Very sad.
I second what Mike Zenor said. Man, that guys voice.....he had so much more feeling than a lot of his popular "contemporaries" I heard the news on the way home from work....64 is to young to go....
I loved Mustang Sally-sorry to hear another great man is gone. Too many "Days the Music Died" lately. I challenge any of the younger HAMBers to name ONE song from the last decade that will last like Wilson Pickett's music. Old guys rule!!
Time to pop in the Blues Brothers 2000 DVD... and fast forward through all the John Goodman scenes. It's a black arm band day, fer sure.
Just got done listening to "634-5789"...written by Eddie Floyd (Knock on Wood) and Steve Cropper (Booker T and the MG's and Blues Brothers).....what a song......
Sorry to hear it. Every time I hear that song though, I think of Sandra Bullock walking out of the hanger in 'Miss Congeniality', all made up for the beauty pageant. WOW.
I didn't catch this yesterday, but it's weird because my wife and I were just talking about Wilson Pickett at dinner last night. When my son (now 5) was 2 years old, he heard Mustang Sally and went around for a week singing "Mutsnang Salad" To this day he still has a thing for Mustangs... and tossed salad. As others have said, thanks for the music, Mr. Pickett.
