Hello guys. I have a 54 chevy belair with the 235 motor. last week I replaced the intake/exhaust manifolds and gaskets. And I got the carburetor rebuilt. I took the manifolds to machine shop to get resurfaced. The carb was tuned. Anyway I drove it Friday night for the first time and after driving it for 30 minutes it shut off. Once I turned it on to drive it I had to keep my foot on the gas and other foot on the break in order to drive it back home. You guys have any idea what's causing that. Any info would be appreciated thank you. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
You did not say WHY you had to replace manifold gaskets and do the resurfacing and have the carb rebuilt. Was this stalling out a concern BEFORE this work was done ? It sounds like you may be experiencing a vapor lock condition. Are you familiar with vapor lock?
My old exhaust manifold was cracked. So I replaced it along with the intake manifold. And while I was at it I got the carb rebuilt. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Sounds like idle jet clogged up. Did you put on a new fuel filter? How does it run now? Is it still balky or did it cure itself when it cooled off?
It wasn't stalling out before. I had back fire and exhaust leak before the work was performed. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Does your manifold still have heat riser in it could be stuck. Those manifolds had exhaust heating up the intake to prevent vapor lock. May want to install a kit from tom Langdon.
I checked my heat riser and it is not stuck. It is all intact. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Had a similar problem with my Plymouth flathead 6 after installing Langdon headers and his heat riser replacement kit. Turned out the problem was fuel pump and line too close to the front header. Built a shield for the fuel pump and it helped a little. Then I used header wrap on the headers and the fuel line. No problem after doing this.
