The second part of the York 2015 Musclecar madness show actually takes place at Beaver Springs for drag racing in Sunday , July 12th, 2015. There's a pretty good possibility that the famous " Stockers To The Lanes Please" call may very well be heard as Beaver Bob may be planning to run the Stockers in their own eliminator this year!! The more cars, the better chance that the Stockers will have a part of the show. If you're sitting on one from the past, dust it off. It's going to be a blast. There won't be a Teardown barn so Cheater cams welcome....... Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Only wish I had a picture of our G/Stock '58 Chevy my brother and I ran at Niagara Drag Strip in '66 and '67. Think I've shared this on here before but it's probably 200 pages back. We wanted to put a Junior Stocker together and my brother wanted to run a 348. Figured a '58 would be the cheapest body to buy so we got with a tech guy at Niagara to see what body weight/HP combination would be the best for any given class. Turned out a 250 HP 348 in a Delray Tudor sedan ratio was 14.00. If you look up a few posts you'll see that G/Stock was 14:00 - 14:99. Pretty much a no brainer. Found a decent Delray body and a donor '58 with a running 348. Put everything together with a 4spd and 4:56 gears and went racing. We put a new stock cam in it, checked the bearings, Doug's headers and M&H cheater slicks. The car was competitive and won its class most of the time. All that fun and new friendships for around a thousand dollars total. Great memories. Lee
The attached picture has been in my files for several years. It is an unattributed shot of an early A/S '60 Chevy with California black-on-yellow license plates. That license plate series was replaced by the yellow-on-black plates in about 1962 so that constitutes about the only evidence of that moment in time. I suspect that the driver might have been Elwin Westbook but I have no proof of that.
I miss the Junior Stock classes. I always thought they put on a great show!!!!!!!! I would love to see the NHRA bring back Junior Stock and Modified Production someday. Jimbo
I remember those 348's. Back in 1969, at Dover Drag Strip my father came up against 1961 Impala 'convertible' 348/280 HP 'Tri-Power' 4-Speed in K/Stock {12.50 to 12.99 Wt/HP}. A bunch of kids from Danbury, Connecticut found it sitting in the side-lot of a Sunoco Gas Station with about '40' Class Winner decals from Connecticut Drag Strip on the windows. The Impala hadn't been raced for 2-Years {since early-1967}. Man was that 61' Impala 348 'Tri-Power' loud. It scared the Hell out of us. In Time Trials it was running in the 13.2o's, which was just off the National Record of 13.12. We had never seen a 348 Tri-Power in our class before, so my Father went down to the Tower to see if the Tech Inspector had made a mistake in classing the Impala with us in K/Stock. Sure enough, the 1961 Impala 'convertible' with the 348/28o HP 'Tri-Power' with the Hydraulic Camshaft fit into our class. #3600 lbs. ~ 280 HP = 12.75 Wt/HP Man, 'what a beast' that car was.
Paul Ceasrine: Who owned the 62 or 63 Chevrolet blue station wagon with either a 348 or a 409 that raced at Dover every Sunday for years and if my memory is correct was driven by a gal. The car ruled for years and was really bad to the bone. Jim Hill
Jim, There was a 1962 Chevrolet Biscayne 'Station Wagon' with a 409/380 HP 4-Speed that ran at Dover in the mid-and-late 1960's. But it was 'Honduras Maroon'. Very Fast............. It could have been driven by Ms. Jean Jankaura ..... It was classed in; 1967 > C/Stock 1968 > F/Stock 1969 > G/Stock There was also, Fred's Speed Shop that ran a 1963 Station Wagon {light blue} in F/MP. They won just about every week.
Yes, The Wenzel Brothers, 1960 Biscayne 'Sedan' was a 348/320 HP 'Turbo Thrust Special'. But it was not at Dover Drag Strip.
C/S 348 Chevy of Geiger and Williams ran at '64 Indy Nationals. Driven by Ron Williams from Canal Fulton, OH. Looking at the emblem in the grille, the car was probably not an original 348.
The Wenzel Brothers Did run a 348/320 HP in 1964 and 1965. D/Stock = 11.29 to 11.88 Wt/HP It was an 11.25 Compression Ratio engine with the 'optional' High-Lift Mechanical Camshaft. And with the Carter AFB #2897S {1 9/16" x 1 11/16" Throttle Bores}, and advertised at 670 CFM's. Weight puts the car at a 'minimum' of #3616 lbs.
Thanks for posting the 2 TENSION pics, biscaynes. Do you have any more ? This 57 really has bitten me hard. Unfortunately, my 1;1 57 was finished before I came across the pics of the j/s, so I'm having to make do with a 1;25 model.
Does anybody know what the Camshaft Specifications were on the 1960 Chevy 348/320 HP. It is listed as having a 'special high-lift' camshaft.
Lift .410 I, .412 E duration I: 316deg E: 287deg lash .012 & .018 overlap 80deg. This cam and heads were replaced in April of '60 and upgraded the HP to 340hp rating for '61 but continued to be rated at 320hp for the rest of '60 production. A sneaky winner if you bought one after April! Verne
The photo of Tension & Good In-tension gave me a good enough look to see: Tension's bumper bullets have been swapped for something chrome(?) that doesn't fit quite like the rubber bullets. -and- Looks like the rockets may have been removed. Great pix!
