COE My 1941 Chevy COE Project

Discussion in 'Off Topic Hot Rods & Customs' started by 1941 Chevrolet COE, Jul 13, 2014.

  1. mcgyver,

Well I live in the Cereal State as my Dad call's it, the Land of Fruits and Nuts.

If Sacramento can squeeze a penny out of us they will. My fee's will be fairly low though compared to my F350.

Stove Bolt approved me and I was able to post the ch***is, after waiting for a mod to approve the post. Pretty slow process there. Looks like a great site though.

Ha, that is funny, I may have to use that.

If I recall it is a couple that are still running the site and they have lots going on. Now that you are on, you shouldn't be waiting on anyone to post etc. It doesn't see the traffic that the Hamb has, so it may be a day or so before someone replies. They also typically build them closer to stock than we do here but they won't harr*** you for it. I don't suggest going to post on the VCCA forum and mentioning that it is not stock, that is all they are interested in there and make it known.

What are you thinking on for a ch***is and drivetrain on yours?

  3. W350 12V ***mins Dually is the current line of thinking.

That's a really good truck you have there, its in such good condition..

Like wise with the siren, second dibs on it, I just love it.!

Best of luck with the kitchen remodeling.

  5. This may be a stupid question but I’m going to ask it anyway:
I am looking a first gen Dodge ***mins trucks with a dual axle.
I have seen guys buy donor ch***is, remove and relocate the motor and ****** behind the cab, and then stretch the frame.
Why not leave the motor and driveline where it is, remove the front axle, stretch the frame forward, and then remount the front axle?
By stretching the front axle out all your lines aft of the motor won’t need to be lengthened saving a lot of fab and parts cost.
Seems too simple to me so I must be overlooking something.

  6. I have to stop and think about this one! LOL I cut 21" off the front of mine and 48" off the rear, that way my engine stayed where it was. This was a fire truck, not a pick-up though.

  7. My CHP appointment got moved up to the 13th to get my VIN # verified...Yahoo, it was 23 August.

Once I get the Vin done I can start with getting the cab removed and getting it prepped for body work and primer.

I also found a California 1941 original plate at a garage sale for $20 and the DMV says I can use it when the VIN # gets verified.

No comments on stretching the donor ch***is forward of the motor?

  8. I don't see why it wouldn't work, can you make the cut in front of the motor mounts and behind the suspension?

I think that you will have to look at the frame shape and determine if you can pull it off. Usually the frame is pretty straight and flat in between the cab and rear axle on the 1 ton and bigger trucks, once it gets to the cab/firewall it starts to narrow and change shape. It might be harder to fit a new piece onto the front vs cutting in the middle.

Depending on what wheelbase you want you may actually leave your donor at factory length.

  10. Well the good State of California agrees that I bought a 1941 Chevy COE.

Finally got all my paperwork squared away and will have my ***le in hand soon. Not too bad for this state, the CHP got it done in less than a month.

Time to pop the cab off.

  11. Got the ***le yesterday.

I have a buyer for the ch***is and I may have found a donor 1992 Dodge Ram with a ***mins/dually.

    Things are finally coming together.

As soon as this kitchen gets done I'll have time to work on it again.

  12. Bought my donor today.

It's a 1996 5.9L ***mins, dually, two-wheel drive, extended cab, with brand new tires, Alcoa Rims, automatic, with 117,000 miles.

Stole it for $3500 and it runs awesome.

  13. 96 was still the 12 valve wasn't it? $3500 sounds like a great deal and it looks like you will have body parts for sale. Probably not worth as much as they would be up here in Gods salty paradise, but still worth something

  14. I believe the 12V served through 1997.5 when it went to the smog choked 24V to make the tree huggers happier (notice I didn't say satisfied).

Still waiting on the Kalifornia DMV to approve my Non-Op before I pull the cab of the COE.

NOTHING happens fast in the Occupied Territories ...

That donor Dodge is awesome! I'd love to find something like that just to have a spare truck for the dirty farm work.

  16. Well if you could get a real close look at her the front valance is held on with bailing wire, the dash has holes in it, the driver side dually blister is cracked, it smells inside, and the ****** will need some work.

The motor is solid though and it drives real nice.

It almost wouldn't be a Dodge if the dash wasn't a mess and the ****** didn't need work. ;-) the 1st thing I would do is make sure the "Killer Dowel Pin" issue was taken car of. Then rework the transmission and drive the heck out of it.

Wow dude, you scored that truck!

  19. Thanks Daddio211, I'm very happy with it. Been driving it to find out what else is wrong with her but she goes real well.

    Back on topic:

I have found a 1947 Chevy Panel body with normal rust...so as you can tell I have the extend it/crew cab it bug again.

I think I can get the body for $500-$1000.

Wasn't 47 the transition year to a wider body style?

  20. Mid 47 was the beginning of the Advance Design. I don't know if the new design of each model came out at mid year, or if some of the lessor selling models waited until 48 model year.
That is sweet that you can drive and get to know your donor truck, before you dismantle it.

  21. Wolfcreek-Steve, I have to have a truck so finding one that I could drive and tow with was a must.

My F350 is worth too much to chop up as a donor. It's for sale by the way!

The kitchen is done, and paid for!

    My wife's veto is nullified!

I have Scouts this weekend, but the weekend after is mine to remove the COE Cab finally.

One reason to move the engine behind the cab is more leg/foot room.

Say whaaaaaaaaaaat??? Need more Shoebox info please!!! :D

  25. Daddio211
I'm in negotiations for the Shoebox but it's looking good.
All original with 3 on the tree and flat head V8.
Body is rust free and straight.
Owner is kind of proud of it though and we're about $3000 apart.

  26. I guess we all have different likes/dislikes, I can't imagine paying $3000 for a shoebox, saying nothing about being $3000 apart. LOL (I suppose most wouldn't own an Autocar either)

  27. This one is pretty nice Steve.
    But not $6000 nice!
