Early Ford Banjo rear widths ???

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by SamIyam, Dec 31, 2010.

  1. Hi guys!

Does anyone know the different widths of early Ford banjo rear ends?

    Model A ?

    '32-'34 Ford?

'35-'40 ? I presume the same... or ***UME... they are the same. :D

'41-'48 (I think these are 61 1/4" flange to flange.

I am cooking up a little project and would like to know what they are so I can start searching for the appropriate rear.

    TIA!!

I have a '40 and a model a I can put my hands on later this morning. You want backing plate to backing plate or the wheel mounting surface or?

I measured the wheel mounting surface to the wheel mounting surface of my stock 40 Ford rear end and it is 59.5 inches.

Anyone know what the front WMS to WMS distance is?

  5. The 35-41 are 59 1/2" like 19Fordy said and I think model A -34 are 1 inch narrower at 58 1/2"

  6. Wheel mounting surface to wheel meounting surface is what I need.

A friend has a '48 I can get from him... it's still under his car... and I want to put it under a Model A with fenders...

I'd like the wheels to stick out a bit more than with a stock A rear end... but not too wide like I have seen on some A's with what I persume is the '48 axle I can get a hold of. :/

    Sam,
I think you are right on the 41'-48' width. My dad has a 46' rear that we were just measuring & it was just a shade over 61" wide between wheel mounting surfaces. It's a wide ****er

    - Model A (1928-1931) is 57 Inches (drum to drum)

    - 1932-'34 is 57 and 3/4

    - 1935-'41 is 59 and a half

    . . . and '48 is 61 inches.

    I hope this helps.

Appropriately at Halloween time I'm dragging this thread up from the crypt. My question, I have a '31 Ford Coupe I'm putting a 59A flathead, '37 Ford 3 speed and a banjo rear into it. I have access to a free '40 rear that's stripped down with questionable axles, and a '48 rear complete with drums, brakes, radius rods, and torque tube. I want to build a highboy fenderless style and will be running '35 ford 16" wire wheels. How bad will a '48 rear look on this ride?

Depends to some degree on the wheel off-set you use. If the wheel mounting surface is near the face of the wheel it will look a lot different than a deep dished wheel.

I wouldn't say it looks bad to run the wider rear. Just noticeable to someone in the know. It doesn't make it wrong or right.
