my trucks been waiting patiently lately..fell on hard times lately but things are coming right again so planning to start picking away at it again real soon.

WOW!! great progress 46Steel!! last time I saw your truck you were doing the final bodywork. Its sure looking goooood now , I love your hood ,think mine will look pretty similar. Keep up the good work

 

I had my pickup at the National Hotrod Show here in the weekend...got some great feedback. It's the first time I've been able to get away back from it as it's always been in my shop with stuff around it and on it lately...sure is LOOOW lol

Looks like you had two different looks going on too. Great idea, as you can only see one side at a time.
Also, this is the first time I've seen it in a shot where you can see the whole truck.

Hi Paul, Mark here, just read through the whole thread and yes, as many have already mentioned, amazing workmanship. What got me keen to find this thread was looking at the photo's of the truck in the show on Faceache, I couldn't work out for the life of me what was so " Wrong " with your truck. Now my old friend in Invercargill, Steve Goodman, had a Bonus for awhile which we kick around in and so I keep thinking that either he had a earlier model or yours was different,BUT, now I know, throw a couple of Chevy doors at a Ford and alter to suit, roof chop etc and ,yes, you have a totally different Custom cab. Amazing and as an old Beater, something I wouldn't of thought to do. Oh, that old hammer you call a donkey cock is one old old hammer and the one that somebody, can't remember the name sorry, is the correct " Donkey Cock " hammer, single head out one side. I have subscribed to this thread too as you certainly have caught my attention with your workmanship. Can I ask too, you prefer gas welding / hammer dressing over using a tig welder ? Looking at the roof where you butt welded the patch panel you certainly are not having heat issues which can result in extra work. Next time I'm down to visit my Sister and Brother in law in Mosgiel, I will have to get in touch with you.

 

Hi Mark,thanks for a compliments I prefer gas welding (i don't actually own a tig!) joins on outer panels or anything that requires hammering up and metal finishing. I use a MIG for plug welds and such like tho.
The reason I prefer Oxy/Acet welding is because I actually can use the heat to my advantage in final forming the shape I'm going for. With a TIG there isn't that luxury,so the panels need to fit together really well before starting to tack them up.
I still have a few heat distortion issues here and there, but know how to deal with them.

If you are coming down this way ,look me up on FB as I'm not on here as much as I was ,since the redesign...but hey, that could change as I've had a lot of help from Hambers and met great people here.

well....the only thing Ford on this one is the cab itself and the front sheetmetal...at this stage haha most of it is GM and theres a few Dodge bits going on too .

 

And guys, you have to remember that way down here in NZ., we didn't have the luxury of a heap of aftermarket go fast gear for Ford engines as we do for Chevy so although that is changing, it is still cheaper to rebuild a Chev engine with the right internals etc then a Ford. Hence a good percentage of our Rods and Custom cars have Chevies in them. I will say that due to our high dollar against the USA dollar we have imported a high number of cars and parts with more desirable engines like the Olds., Buick and Caddy engines. We also have a guy importing new flathead engines now too for those that want the real traditional look and sound.

 

Sorry, I don't post a whole lot here, BUT... Let me get this straight, to see if I am seeing this correctly? On the chop... Instead of cutting down the middle of the skin and using a filler strip.. You slit the skin just above the drip rail, and slid the intact roof forward? Then shaped and filled it in around the back of the skin to the rear window panel? Amazing, and I have NEVER seen it done that way. Hope you don't mind if I borrow some of your ideas?

I have a 50 model F-1 that I am wanting the same look on. Right now I have my flathead running like top, 20 inch steel Dodge spares on the back, and 17 inch spares from the same style truck on the front. I will have to fab some fender wells for the inner bed wall, as it just touches just enough to be a problem. The outside clearance is almost spot on. I am thinking a drop axle in the front, and Zing the rear frame about the thickness of the frame, maybe a little more. I refuse to be one of those Chevy S-10 frame with a SBC guys, so it will take a little work. Not afraid of that, just finding the time with a 45 hour a week job, and working every other Saturday at an auto parts store... Thankfully that may be ending soon, as the business changed hands and the store will be closed in March.

Hi Miguello, thanks for the positive feedback ! The way you describe the chop is pretty much just how I did it. Saves a lot of work this way, i did lean the windshield posts back a bit ,mainly to suit the curve of the door frames, but by leaning them back it also reduced the amount of filler strip I needed across the rear of the roof skin. Around the rear pillars and sides I basically just un-rolled the rear cab corners and butt welded the joints.
The only reason i have larger sections welded into the sides of the roof is due to rust in those areas.

46Steel....how much did you take out of your hood? I've taken 4.5ins out of mine.
