First, the Culver City covers mean nothing more than they are Culver City covers, tells you nothing about the cases. I posted some photos of mine for comparison. A repair on these may or may not be an issue, mine has several repairs. If they were being raced they are not that strong and are often broken and repaired. Not sure on the price, but I know they are not cheap and getting more expensive every day. Why do you want it? You can buy new cheaper. I wanted an original, but it ended up costing more than a new V8 quickchange would from say Hot Rod Works. If you want an original you are going to pay for it, if you just want a quickchange to drive under a Hot Rod I would go with a new one.
I go with hotrod A buy a new one as they are better than an old one with repairs. rodsville make s a killer one like the old Hallie's but better.
As Jeery stated, the real deal cost way more than a new one and may not be able to be functional. Old cases that have been abused are really not worth the $$$ unless that is your thing. Halibrand has the vintage name and looks but the new technology used by Winters is far superior for performance and longevity. $1800 for the welded pinion is too much in my mind. If the other one is good (inside and out) it will bring the money at the swap meets. Nothing beats the look of a QC under a hot rod.
Yep, if you want an original you are going to pay for the privilege. Update: Just checked, a Rodsville center-section with all the parts is $1695 at Hot Rod Works.
Yep, but in 1984, they were only $75! And Culver City covers were $20! Ranks right up there with 32 stuff.
I have 3 Halibrand 201 rears. 1 with the square blocks on the side, and 2 without. I think the blocks were there so you could knock a hammer against it to help loosen the cover during removal. But that's just my guess. One of mine has had the whole snout broken off and welded back on years ago. It came out of a stock car and was obviously used after the repair. So I'm not scared to use it myself. But that said, $1800 is too much for the broken one. It's probably a fair to high price for the good one though. If I didn't already have a few Halibrands and was wanting one, I'd probably just buy a Rodsville.
It is a sprint car type box, but I know little about them. Looks similar to the ones we ran in our sprint. But, I just bought them and installed them.
Steering box is later model, possibly Schroeder or Norden, definitely not early model Franklin. Race car specific, normally way too fast for street application. I've seen them from $200-400, but if it's unuseable, it's a moot point.
That box has a Schroeder sticker on it. You can still buy a Schroeder exactly like that, or buy one with the exact dimensions you need for your application. That are really not that expensive, especially compared to those quickchanges.
Two NOS, Culver City units just sold for $1200 each at the Don Broyles auction last weekend. The were still in the original boxes.
That center section in the box looks more like a Rodsville to me than a 50 year old Culver City Halibrand.
That looks like a Rodsville unit to me... http://www.south40streetrods.com/RodsvilleV-8Quickchange.html
I would tend to agree with you but the seller said no. I don't see the 201 on the bottom ridge either. Still a good deal at $1200.
That is definitely a rodsville, check out the beefed up support inside. Good deal regardless of the lie... I have a CC halibrand under my current roadster, bought it at an auction a couple years ago. It is kinda beat up looking, more than a few battle scars... I had one superficial crack in a non-critical area repaired and I paid considerably less than $1800 for it. In fact I don't even have $1800 in the whole rolling rear end.
