Thanks 296ardun and no problem on the misspelling. That is my dad's dragster at Lion's with the Jim Davis chassis. If I can figure out why I keep getting an error when trying to load pictures I will post a few.

  4. Smog Rat, I was a fan of your Dad. I first met Boyd when he was partnered with Burke Le Sage in a '31 Model A lakes roadster. Burke was a good friend of me and my dad. I later watched Boyd run the Bantam bodied fuel altered roadster at Pomona, San Gabe, and LIONS.

Dad smoking the tires (2).jpg Thanks Dean for the reply. Yes my dad and Burke were good friends and teamed up to run at the lakes. My dad ran his altered all over Southern California but loved Lions!

Stan Lucas's Scrounger must of been a handful.

  8. Here's a pic from Drag News of Larry Faust beating Boyd in a 2 out of 3 defense of the #1 Jr. Eliminator spot. I was there. Larry and Gene loved beating tube framed glass bodied cars with the 25oo lb. all steel coupe.

Fremont's predecessor, Salinas -- opened in the early '50s.

Beginnings of trouble in the lights, note the fire behind the blower and the oil stream below the engine

I think that this was the last of Kenny Ellis' "Trigsters" before he went to twin motored gas digger.

Fremont was a regular for gassers

Burke Le Sage was a real pioneer, and a good guy who took the time to explain things to young dumb kids. The '34 coupe below was his, powered by an injected Chrysler. I was 15 when I first saw it at San Gabriel, and, curious about Hilborn injection, Burke patiently explained how it worked...that was '57 or early '58, but never forgot it.

Here is the partnership Dean talked about, Penington-Le Sage roadster, this time at Bonneville...I wonder if this was the same car Boyd drag raced with the blown Chrysler...bright red, I remember it well.
