image.jpg image.jpg I'm having some trouble finding wheel covers to fit my steel wheels which I believe are the originals. They are 15" and that's the size wheel covers I bought but they will not fit over the middle of my wheels? Anyone know how I can make these work or should I just return them and buy something different? I really like these and hope you guys can help me make them work.
    Thanks!

Pop the dust cap off and try it then. It may give you enough to fit the hupcaps on there. you can always put a shorter dust cap on later if it works

.....or if thats the problem he could just try it on the rear.

I re read his post and I now see where he said they wont fit over "the middle" of his wheels, so yeah, good advice.

  4. if I am reading this correct and understanding your question, then you need to get new wheels. If those wheels are like the 1950 stock wheels, the center hat portion of the wheel is too tall for newer hubcaps. those wheels were designed for small center cap style hubcaps. Again I may be wrong if those wheels are not like stock 50 chevy ones :)
    carry on...

Borracho13 you are correct. Because they won't fit over the rear center part either and they don't have dust caps. So I guess it's the middle hat part that they won't clear in the rear and both that part and the dust caps in the front they won't clear. What wheels should I buy to make them work? Thanks for all your help guys!

There were several later GM cars with the 15" x 4.75 bolt pattern that were OEM.
'70 Chevy full size, '70 thru at least '77 Monte Carlo and it's "sister" models, late '70s Buick intermediates, etc. All would have a wheel that I think would accept the caps you have. They are a bit 'deeper set'.

You've got the stock 15" wheels which are 5" wide with 3-1/2" backspacing which as stated is the root of your problem. Running without dust covers is not the best of solutions, you need to pick a wheel a little wider or if you really want to stick with 5" wide one with a little less backspacing. As Ray said, look into getting something off a 70s/80s GM car. backspacing.jpg

  12. 70/80's gm car would be your best bet. I have to do the same swap on mine and went through the same things when figuring out that hub caps wont fit. My shitty luck is that i have a collection of hub caps, mostly cadillac. Now with the updated chevy wheels, my cadillac caps do not fit on either one of my wheels! :( I still have to get new caps for the wheels.
If i ever wanted to run any of my cadillac hub caps I would have to get another set of wheels that would take deep hub caps :D

Would 15 x 8 be too wide to run on my car? Rubbing issues?

No Junk Yards in your area? Bring 1 of your hubcaps with you to try first then be sure to get the correct bolt pattern.

Yeah I think 8 in rims would be to wide for your tires to.

RE: Nothing on Craigslist....Lots of folks won't list stuff that they really
don't think will sell...or they just don't want to deal with it...Put a "WANTED"
Ad on your local Craigslist....I am sure there are a set of wheels in someones
garage just collecting dust.......OR...if you are in a club or know of a car club

Or you can save yourself some trouble and just buy new wheels. That's what I ended up doing after I bought a used set of '75 Malibu wheels and TWO of them turned out to be bent.
These are what I have on the front of my car:

And if you want something more traditional then these don't cost a whole lot more:

Stock wheels are 5" wide. I'm running 6" wide, and I used to have 7" wide on the rear. 6" or 7" will work fine with your tires, but 6" will look more stock.

Atomickustom I love what you are running on yours! And they're not expensive at all. Those hubcaps I bought were half the price of a set of those wheels. Thanks for the info!

We're supposed to be "traditional" here. Why not reverse your '54 wheels ? Then any 15'' wheel cover will fit, you save a little $$, & you've actually done something instead of buying stuff ...

So I just flip the wheels around? That will work? But I will still have to buy smaller dust caps correct?

And why are there only dust caps on the front two wheels? And will any dust cap fit? Sorry so many questions guys. I'm new to this.

You seem to be a bit of a newbie, but we all were at one time or another. Your first order of business is to find out exactly where the clearance problem is. Only then can you deal with it properly.

Once you've figured that part out, do as Slopok suggested ^^^, only take one of your old wheels with you as well. That way you can match the width and the bolt pattern as well as the offset so that your new junkyard wheels with fit your car without rub issues AND allow your new hubcaps to fit as well. This will not be a difficult experience if you can find an older junkyard.

15 x 5's or 15 x 6's will do just fine and were very common. Stay away from wider rims or deep offsets as they may cause clearance problems later on when you lower your car or go with taller tires.

    Good luck!

Thanks missysdad1! Yes I am a very new newbie. I have had a few older cars but haven't really had to do anything to them. I want to make this one mine and with my taste. Like I said before sorry for all the questions.

You need either a wider wheel or a wheel with a deeper offset. The problem is that the hub sticks out so far from the center of your wheel, right? That's why it's only a problem on the front.

"Reversing" the wheels refers to cutting the rim off of the center, taking it off, turning it around, and welding it back on inside out. I would not attempt it and I certainly would not recommend that you attempt it!
I believe a standard-offset 15x6 or 15x7 wheel will solve your problem, but if it won't there are a couple places that will make a wheel any width you want and they will space the rim out farther on the center for a deeper wheel (one with less backspacing). Last time I looked they were just under $100 per wheel.

I no longer have the original front suspension on my car so I cannot absolutely guarantee that the wheels I have will solve your problem, but I have seen plenty of stock-suspension '49-54 Chevy cars running full hubcaps of different kinds so I think that just going up to a 6-inch wide rim will give you just enough spacing to install just about any full wheel cover.

Just under a 100 per wheel? dang, that may be fair for new wheels but I would hope to find some used ones for 10 to 20 bucks each if I were just gonna put hubcaps over em providing the hubcaps would work on em.

The stock accessory wheel cover for '54 Chevy is a really pretty cap. I'd find a clean set of those, which will of course fit the stock wheels that you have. Look for them on eBay:

    I have late 70s full size GM wheels on my 54 with Olds flipper caps, they work very well . I picked the wheels up at the local wrecking yard for about 20 bucks each . Good luck ;
