These were posted on the FB page of the Chautauqua (NY) Sports Hall of Fame along with this write up: The “In Years Past” column in the Tuesday, November 4, 2014, issue of the Post-Journal contained an item of interest to the Chautauqua Sports Hall of Fame: "In 1939, Satan’s Bowl of Death closed its season Friday with a party honoring the drivers who had participated in the events held throughout the summer… Colored motion pictures of various races held in the Bowl were shown." Satan’s Bowl of Death, located on the Big Tree–Sugar Grove Road, hosted auto racing meets from 1939 to 1941. A**** the drivers who competed at Satan’s was Lloyd Moore from Frewsburg, an inductee of the Chautauqua Sports Hall of Fame. If anyone has any information regarding the existence of those films, please post a reply. Satan's Bowl would have been about 2 1/2 miles from where I grew up. I never heard of it. The track had long been closed by the time I was born and appears to have been mostly before my father's time as well.[/ATTACH]
Reminds me of the races they used to hold in Monpelier Indiana . The first time I went was in highschool aprox 1980, it was a dirt track with potholes so bad that one car lost a wheel, hub and all , the race had to be stopped twice to drag bumpers off the track. It wasn't so much a race as it was a circle track demolition.
That "Satan's Bowl of Death" is almost cool enough to be proposed as a new name for the HAMB! Faulkner couldn't have come up with anything better!
Love that old ticket. Especially at the bottom where it says "See You Next Sunday". Like instead of going to church on Sunday, for a quarter you can spend the afternoon in Satan's Bowl Of Death! Satan's Bowl Of Death would be a good name for somebody's homemade chili. And a good ***le for a Rev. Billy C. Wirtz album.
And likely NO seat belts. Did you notice the steel loop on the A roadster. You think that was a roll bear? OMG
I did a quick search and came up with some more on Satan's Bowl of Death http://www.starnewsdaily.com/viewby...tauqua-County-Satans-Bowl-of-Death-2013-02-22 This one was about the same distance from me going the other way. Again, never heard of it in my years up there although I'm sure my father grew up with it: The Roll-a-Bowl I grew up with State Line Speedway - not far from the site of the Bowl-of-Death, it was a 1/4 mile dirt track. I think it's paved now. Looking at the scenery and landscape, I'm pretty sure I know exactly where both the Bowl-of-Death and Roll-a-Bowl were. Not much changes in Western NY. Makes me want to head up with a metal detector....
