But I think those days are over now, since I do not like to scrap perfectly good parts I joined the VCCA to find a good home for the original drivetrain from my 37 Chevy p/u which I did and gave the parts away so they could be used again and not end up in that cheap crap we get from China. I got reading in the members only section about a petition to ban modified vehicles from their shows and that set me off, they have been talking about trying to get new members and that is one way to but the brakes on that. I under stand if they do not want to judge modified vehicles but let people bring them in and make a class for them so everyone can be happy and get more people to show up. My next project is going to be a low mile original or restored that I will destroy and post pictures of its destruction and me taking all the original parts to the scrap yard,I was tollerant of restorers up to now and its gone so the war has started.

Whoa, too much caffeine, dude. Just let it ride. This has been the attitude/rules of restorers' clubs for a long time. No need to get worked up. Just smile, build your projects and pass on the extra parts to anyone who can use them. You can be bigger than they are.

  4. WTF? like that solves anything? seriously, take a breather.

buuuut, if yer' gonna fuck one up, dont be a pussy and find something like a mint duece.

The restorer crowd have never liked us who modify their precious antiques. Always has been friction between the two camps. We have a local show sponsored by the AACA (or whatever that group is called) every year, and when I used to go you could feel the icy stares and hear the negative comments from those guys because we brought in hot rods.

But prejudices are all over the car hobby, look at how we hate the dreaded RR words on here. Or how some Ford guys hate Chevys, etc. Just the way people are programmed.

  7. Pretty funny. Hot Rodders cut up, Restorers put back. Having said that, some of us are both. I take the typical opinionated loud mouth as someone whom enjoys the sound of themselves. Even some of the yoyos here get on my nerves. That which cannot bend, shall eventually break. Way of the world. Broken typically gets buried, and recycled. The birth of a hot rod. For a restorer to not appreciate great parts.....that's his problem. Kinda' stupid really. Talk about alienation.

  8. You join a club that is dedicated to the "restoration" of automobiles and then bitch about it when they won't accept your car which does not fit in the parameter of what they are doing?
Thats kind of like joining a football team and complaining when you show up in a baseball uniform to play baseball.

Took it to a Concourse show in Snotsdale (Scottsdale) AZ and you shoulda heard the response's I got. I had a ball that day

Gotta agree - "we" as a community put on traditionally styled only shows......imagine if the billet street rod guys started buying "our" cars and scrapping the flatheads, scot blowers, banjo rearends, etc......just because we wont let them in "our" shows or on "our" website......

They provide a market for our take-off parts, and aren't our competition, for that hard to find, sought after speed equipment part, we may be seeking .

Why would you give away parts to VCCA members, then be mad at them because they now don't want to let modified vehicles into their show? It's their show to isolate themselves with.
I get along fine with restorers. They buy my unwanted stock parts and I utilize the money for my projects.
I can recall many times recently where a restorer's (Model A, etc.) hoard came up for sale from his estate. Helped out some restorers as well as Rodders.
At least restorers are car guys. The only thing that bugs me about them is when they walk up to a Hot Rod or Custom and mumble "I wouldn't ruin a nice car by doing that to it" without knowing the history. Many times the car was bought already modified or was "too far gone" for a restorer. I think that game has changed lately; Hot Rodders used to start with scraps cast off by restorers. Now guys with $$$ are buying fully restored cars (especially Model A's) as a starting point for a Hot Rod and that makes the restorers cringe.
I have a bigger bone to pick with fellow so called "Rodders and Customizers" as I've fixed more of their shitty workmanship over the years then restorers work.
Also remember some guys today are not as hard core on either side of the fence as they have a Hot Rod and a restored car of some type in their stable.

I appreciate restored and hot rod cars. I have original stuff ( motorcycles ) and hot rods that are fun and were to rough to do anything else with when I started! Gary

Must be nice to have enough money to poke yourself in the eye, sounds like some of the comments about vendors/junkyard owners who smash/crush something because they were offered too little for it. Does the world need 90+% of projects with belly buttons in them? No, but if you like boring it's your car.

I remember, years ago, when I moved to Australia, all my hot rod friends, warned me
about this "Old Grouch" of a guy, lived sorta near me, had a shed FULL of 32's and
all the good hard to find parts. BUT, he is a restorer and won't even talk to you if you
even mention the word "Hot Rod". So awhile later, I was selling at a Swap Meet, this
older quiet polite man steps up to my table, buys 4 or 5 items, never complaining about
the price, but said he had brought his small car, and could I drop them off at his home,
after he found I lived a bit farther up the highway then he did, I said sure. So, I pull up,
around Tea Time (dinner) and he invites me and my girl friend in to eat, darn near demands
it, we had a wonderful meal, afterwards, he asked if I wanted to see his cars, so we went
out to the shed, and it was FULL of nice old Fords and a bunch of 32's. The walls were
lined with headlights, grilles, horns, dashes, of all styles and years. I was mentioning, I
was working on a 28 Ford Tourer (Pheaton), but needed headlights, he goes over to the
wall, pulls down a very nice pair, and GIVES them to me, I tried to say no, or trade
parts with him, but he insisted. This started a life long friendship.....AND YES, this
was the OLD GROUCH RESTORER everyone had warned me about....sometime
later, sharing a meal, I asked him about what the Hot Rodders had told me, he told
me....I like everyone....but I don't like anyone, who comes by and trys to lowball me
or get something for nothing....which is what a lot of the younger guys had done....
Jim was a SCRAP dealer, worked very hard for many many years...most of his stuff,
was bought out of barns and fields, so folks just figured, he got it for nothing, so should
sell if for cheap......Where I am going with this long winded story, IS.....don't sell anyone
short that has anything to do with Old Cars, Restorers, Lowriders, Street Racers and
Goodness knows, even Rat Rodders........they ALL have their likes and dislikes, but
be assured, they ALL know where something is hanging in a garage that someone
needs......And if you treat them with respect....they will usually do the same....

  18. Hellerlj, RIGHT ON! I've been through some very similar situations, and find that arrogance on the part of anyone tends to turn people off whether it means higher prices or no sale - this sport was meant to enjoy, and the guy who still has the same parts sitting on his blanket at LARS as he had 10 years ago may as well just be viewed as a "displayer" of parts as opposed to a seller. On to the next space.........

Anybody can restore one, but it takes a real man to cut one up.
Usually a hot rod or custom will get more attention than a perfectly restored car.

What the heck! Aren't we all in this together? Restoring is preserving at an as built icon. Hot Rodding is preserving in an as I wanted state. Trad Rod is preserving as a certain time (decade) built. Street Rod is preserving as a different (decade) built. Looks to me like we are all PRESERVING our particular rides to represent whatever form we like personally! As long as rides are getting preserved who really cares in the manner a certain owner took to preserve it? Haven't seen one yet that couldn't be undone, redone, built or rebuilt to your personnel taste. So just do something!

Take a chill pill, you are taking yourself and them far too seriously. :D

After reading your post I can also say, that you are most definitely NOT tolerant, and probably in reality you have never been tolerant.

Always one in the crowd that doesn't quiet get the message and then gets his/her nose out of joint when their rig doesn't fit the criteria for participating in the event.

You should have tried going to street rod events that were "pre 48" or 48 and older in the mid 70's in my 48 pickup to feel like a poor step child and be told that your rig isn't old enough and then be asked to show them your vehicle registration slip. I had to do that more than once.

Still as we as traditional hot rodders or customizers hope and pray that potential participants at our events will respect our criteria for a vehicle being entered in the event we should respect other groups criteria for entry in their events.
What burns my biscuits in any group, forum or neighborhood is a "new guy" coming into the mix and then demanding to the norm for said group because that norm doesn't fit his wants or needs.
