Can someone tell me the diameter of the steering shaft on a 54 car? It is the shaft that goes from the steering box to the steering wheel. Thanks, Jack
Thanks, now I can buy a universal for the shaft. I will get a 3/4" DD and modify the shaft to fit it. Then I am going to install a rack and pinion set-up on the car. I do have another question ... after I cut the shaft from the steering box what keeps the shaft from being pulled up the column? I know there is a bearing to go on the bottom of the column but that would not keep it down unless I position my universal joint close enough to the bearing to serve as a stop. Does that sound right?
its not a true 3/4...borgenson sells the correct one,,,remember that the shaft is not solid,,the horn wire goes through it...i used a set screw too get it where i wanted it .then welded it....if you use only a set screw it will cave in over time...i just made a sleve from round stock , no need for anything else
There is some good general info to be found here that you may want to adapt as early Falcons also share the "deadly spear" with our 50's Fords:http://fordfalcon2000.com/restoration/tiltcolumn.htm
I forget what exact year but front wheel drive buicks have a short adjustable shaft with a rag joint and u joints on both ends which are the right size. I believe the year model was 2000-2004, cost me $5.00 bucks from the pick and pull. I used an aftermarket column and that joint to hook my rear steer R&P.
