Man you guys are too generous.

Its not just Cuba that struggles though!

I am unsure about the state of things there but here in New Zealand almost ANYTHING american is rediculiously expensive.

You guys seem to shoot off to summit and come back with enough parts to build a whole car for $1,000. Over here if I bought those parts from a store they would cost me $5,000...and if I imported myself they would be $1000 plus 1000 freight.

Obviously those are made up numbers but they give a fair indication of things.

Most used bits that we pay huge money for is definitely considered junk over in america :-(

Man I'd love to make the move one day..."I guess the gr*** is always greener" though.

Hey, Bud. Have you thought about sending those unwanted parts to the Kiwis, Aussies, Limeys(I am one so I can say it), France, or Germany ? There is so much talent across the pond, even if they have funny accents. Just kidding.

Well, it's only 90 miles, right?
With enough s**** sheetmetal, we could s***ch together a HAMB barge and fill it with parts. Launch it from Florida.

Can you imagine the balls it takes to drive across 90 miles of open ocean in a rig like that ??? Wow ! A guy I work with just got back from a cruise and the ship he was on was diverted to pick up some Cuban refugees who were on a raft made basically out of a pallet and some sort of floatation material. There were 6 adults and 6 kids on it, and it was sinking.

I would have a hard time setting out on a trip like that in a 30 foot boat, and these people do it on things like this.

Don, I agree 100%. Been to a couple of places in Central America & the Caribbean, many people in those places live in stuff like the raft you described. The Americans they see are tourists spending $$.
Today I'm gonna gather up some stuff to put on the HAMB barge.

Jeff, I have been to Cuba many times and these guys would die for the parts you would like to give them. However the Cuban Government inspects the mail coming into the country and keeps any thing that they deem not suitable for the citizens. I used to send tooth paste, soap etc. to some poorer people we met while on vacation. The goods never arrived for them !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Larry

The Mercedes Benz emblem has three points, representing the three modes of travel, at the time of the company's founding, being land, sea, and air.

They are decidedly not the same thing.[/QUOTE]

Gimpy, My peace sign comment was a bit of a joke. Gary Addcox got it.

The main problem with these parts that started this discussion is the fact that if you build cars you wind up with a lot of extra stuff. Especially if you are a guy that buys 2 or 3 cars to build one and then uses pick a part yards for the rest of the parts to put it together. (I have built a lot of cars this way)

These are things that you would have to pay for in the yard, but you get extra with the second car. I have a school bus full of that stuff. I bet I have not touched some of it in 20 years, (I am 55). I went digging for an alternator the other day, spent an hour going thru the pile, found 2 both labeled good, none worked. I should have given them away when they were fresh and still good.

Besides Craigs list, toss them up here in the sales sect. for free just pay shipping. Or split shipping if you're generous.

I have noticed they use alot of 3/4 ton truck parts on them cars and I have a limited slip Dana 60 with new 3.54 gears and brakes I can not give away up here that I would gladly donate to someone in Cuba if it could get there,it would have been in the s**** pile but I spent over 400 dollars having the new gears installed. I also had 6 real nice 16 inch truck tires no one wanted so I ended up taking them to a small tire shop and traded for two tires that came from another one of my cars mounted and balanced on the truck that the 3/4 ton parts came off of,these parts were on craigslist and truck forums before I pulled them from the truck and no interest..

    I suspected this all along.
As noble a gesture as it may be, chances are slim & none the parts would ever get to the guys that could use 'em.

There's a reason people built those Buick boats to get the hell outa that place, willing to risk it all.

It just makes me sick to see all the parts we throw away and there are people who would love to have them,I knew it would be impossible for them to get those parts and just thinking out loud on a cold a boring night. It would be nice to arrange to find a beat up barge no one wants and fill it with usable parts and make contact with someone there and get it to somewhere where they could unload it.

Just stencil "Taliban" on the parts, drop them off at the nearest federal facility and the government will ship them to gitmo.

    Oh, that's funny!!

  21. First find a Cuban who needs what you got and then ship them over their.

Actually you can go to Cuba from the states now, just apply for a visa and go. The down side is that you really don't want a Cuban stamp in your p***port. There are still countries in the world that will not let you in with a Cuban visa stamp in your p***port.

seriously, if you want to send parts to the commies, just s**** it and it will go to china, there is a reason we don't trade with cuba.

  23. We don't trade with Cuba because of the Government not the people. Our argument with Communist countries has never been with the people who live there, they have no choice, it has always been with the Government.

Here is the problem the question is too loose, you can't just send a box of parts to a country and expect them to land with the people who need them. Its like sending crates of food to Somalia, the people who need the food don't ever get it.

I keep used parts around for spares if they are not used up. They are good enough for you to limp home from my place in a pinch but I would never use them on a daily driver. So the question arises if someone has parts that they would not use for a daily why would they want to give them to someone else to use for a daily.

its just a question, no drama intended. OH and sorry if I sounded political it is not my intention.

    Send them over here!
Just yesterday I ordered a vac advance dizzy unit and it will cost me 53€!!! (shipped and w custom fees paied for). Its outrageous because it is not an overengineered part, just a housing a diaphragm a rod and a nut, not much else. Overthere you buy it over at the local parts store for less than 20 bucks (some 17€ or so).
I could try to make one out of a goats blatter or something...
In fact I cannot complain because I have already been offered hard to find parts I needed by fellow hambers just for the shipment.

  25. get in contact with Sean Penn , maybe he could help you out

  26. Rui,
If you get in a pinch for parts just drop one of the old guys a note. Parts get shipped all over and most of the time it is no big deal, hell long before the kinder gentler HAMB when we are still all hard ***es we used to relay parts all over the place free of charge just because we were going there anyway.

OK off my soap box, if there is some thing that you need just let one of us know.

    Never pay retail. ;)

Thanks porkn******. I already ordered that little vac ****er, but I'll drop you a line when I get in need of other stuff. Back at the Ford Social Group guys also are pretty trigger happy at helping.
    Regards

  28. Not a problem.

If you ever need something and just post a help me please you would be surprised at how many guys would fall all over themselves to lend you a hand.

Ahh. That makes more sense. I never could quite resolve those semaphore positions. I just thought I was remembering them wrong.

Either way, not the Mercedes emblem.
