I am working on my 27, installing a Vega steering box. The 5/8 - 36 spline is a problem , The Corvair and Vega share the same spline but neither of them came from the factory with a U-Joint. This is a budget build and was hoping to find something at the local wrecker. Does a reasonable OEM U-joint exist or am I forced to go to the aftermarket?
From my experience,,,,, rag joint, straight coupling, home made, or aftermarket. I use tons of corvair boxes and have searched till my eyes bled to find nothing.
Good Gravy man, It's your steering! You may have to break the budget a little, But better safe than.... well you know! Brakes and steering neither should be slighted. KK
Hes not asking what he can build with Popsicle sticks and glue, hes asking what FACTORY u-joint he can use. You have no used/rebuilt/non stock parts on your cars?
Hey, Eslope; What would you consider "reasonable", as far as price is concerned? http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Sweet...ine-3-4-Round-Vega-Corvair-GM-Rack,31387.html Roger
I don't intend to build something that is not safe, just the opposite. The aftermarket U-Joints have never impressed me. Ford, GM or any automotive manufacturer never uses set screws on steering shafts, they use a clamping bolt. Set screws would be cheaper than a clamp bolt , so the reason set screws are not used must be safety. I was just wondering if anyone had run across an automotive source for a U-Joint that will fit the Vega spline . I may end up with one of the speciality joints, (they do have a great selection) but by the time you have it landed up here in Canada, you can just about double the catalog price.
In the early days of Vega boxes, the shaft and u-joints from a 914 Porsche, that ran between the column and the firewall, were used a lot. At that time, they were quite reasonably priced too.
