I am looking at a 65 Catalina that supposedly has a super t10 in it. What is the differance and how to tell from looking at the case.
T10s were built from 1957 to 1965 with Super T10s (Second design) built from 1974 to 1983. Richmond ended up taking over from B/W. Early T10 are cast iron case (Like Saginaw 4sd), later are alloy case. http://www.drivetrain.com/parts_cat...erhaul_kits/borg_warner_t10_overhaul_kit.html http://www.pontiacpower.org/BW.htm
There were early T10's with aluminum cases. I have 1 with a code of T10-1C and another with T10-1D cast into the side.
The early T10s were infamous for popping out of gear when decelerating on the engine after they got a bit worn, usually 2nd gear. A redesign on the syncro ***embly for the 'Super' version cured this problem, which was backcut teeth on the gears and syncro ring. The later type syncros can be retrofitted to the early trans, although it's just about as cheap to buy a new one.
The very early BW T-10 had iron case from 1957 to Jan. 1961. then aluminum. Some of the later super T-10s had an iron main case. The torque of the lower 1st gears were trying to push the input gear away from the cluster gear in the aluminum case. They went to an iron main case because it is stronger than aluminum. The second design SUPER T-10 was a much stronger gearbox. Muncie stopped production in 1974. Ago
I have a T10 with an iron case and aluminum tailshaft. The numbers are T10-1B WGD Q2 6-2 It was in my 56 chevy that won cl*** @ the 1965 AHRA winternationals. I was 18 and my buddy and I flat towed it from Baytown Texas to Scotsdale Arizona. The engine was a 268" mouse @ 13.5 pd. per inch
