[1st off I dont wanna hear]-any debates about base clear systems -I just dont want to use them.... I know Laquers are hard, if not impossible to buy locally but what about acrylic enamels????I dont know about you but I hate to put $1000.00 in every paint job for materials needlessly! A buddy of mine[painter] and me were talkin yesterday. He said he was asking his PPG dealer about Delstar Acrylic Enamel, and was told they could not get him a gal of black Delstar. No longer available! I know I know..... base clear- blah blah blah..... I for one love the simple one single stage and its super durability. You who love base clear can enjoy it all you want -just bend over and take it in the As''''''er ..Wallet I mean. This finish is adequate for me and fine and its ease of application is a good point too- It rubs and color sands as well as Laquer and looks beautiful too. I would welcome *****any sources***** of Acrylics..... in ANY brand and your sources with phone numbers are appreciated....Thanks in advance!
Kenny, I'll be interested in some of the answers to your post. I'm no painter but used acrilic enamel for many projects in the past. I rebuilt many wrecks for quick resale and personal use and I got fairly good at applying it. I haven't inquired about it's availability for some time but since you brought it up I'm going to check and see if I can still get it here. Thanks for the reminder. Frank
I thin dupont is still makeing acrylic. I still prefer Dupont over PPG. Just a personal preferance. I know it means i can never get an award for paint at good guys but I never get awards anyway.
I finished building a 1966 H-D this summer and I felt the same way. I went to the local Sherwin-Williams auto paint store and got the paint in a "one step" acrylic enamel. It cost less than 1/3 what the clear coat with hardner was. The only drawback on a motorcycle is gas will melt this type of paint.
Ive been using Western and SW for many years to do trailers and quick fix drivers, trucks, etc. The job on one of my vans has held up fine for 12 years.
Dupont is still making it, we just recently sprayed a model a roadster and I think it came out excellent after sand and buffing of course, it has great depth as well.
Acxtually unless they quit doing os in the last year or so Dupont still makes and sells laquer. at least I can still get laquer at the store up the road here.

There used to be an outfit called Brer's that sold Acrylic enamels for $35. per gallon in most of the basic colors. I can't find their site now. Google for Acrylic Enamel and you'll get lots of hits. Just skip the ones selling Acrylic for artists. Me too on the one shot deal. Base & clear are nice, but acrylic enamels can look just as nice imo....
I agree with porkn******. What's available? I just bought Black Acrulic Enamel. I don't know if acrylic Laquer is made any more? It was used in late 50s, maybe earlier? I know my 59 Chevy had it on from the factory. As far as a smooth traditional looking, deep, durable, and, don't ever need waxing paint job, nothing beats Acrylic Enamel or Urathane Enamel(Dupont Imron, which is still available, just not to regular business paint shops because of EPA. One good thing, as an individual, I can still buy stuff that a licensed paint shop can't. If you want to get non-traditional as you can get, then, As far as base/clear, or anything that looks "wet", they look as phony as a rhinestone nighty on a 40 year old *****, anyhow! (hides the warts). Of course there are times when I digress.
Ya know all I know is its laquer. I normaly decide the color of a car off the custom mix rack, I got a gallon of what they called real dark green, yep just checked its called duracryl acrylic laquer, its a green metalic, darker than midnight in the cypress swamp. Anyway it cost me 25 bucks off the custom mix rack (someone didn't pic it up to you new comers to the game). I also snagged a quart of alpha cryl clear the same day to see if i wanted to clear over it. I'd use the new base coat clear coat stuff but its death to the painter unlike the old stuff that was just death to the dirt. I still really like the one coat enamals as well. I haven't looked for Imron for years, I really liked that stuff. Also death to the painter but its as tuff as it gets. Just speay your final coat on as wet as you can, wet to the point of sagging. Then leave it set a week in as clean a place as you can find and never ever do nuthin but wash it from here on out.
If your looking for real old fashioned paint how about what they sell as "implement enamel". It's about as low buck as you can get. Just painted my car hauler (68 Chevy C-50) and total cost for paint was under $50 at the local farm store. If you want it shinier and more durable there is a hardener available. Wax it and it stays shiny, don't wax it and it will quickly weather to a kind of semi-gloss. Don't expect it to last like more expensive paint, but if you just want to get something all the same color it works.
I just bought a quart of DAR9000, thats PPG delstar acrylic enamel black. This is in mid michigan if that makes any difference.
Thanks guys- didnt wanna panic y-all,but I had heard that its days are definitely numbered.... As to the other brands -[I USED TO PAINT A LOT]..... It is a problem with some of the lesser brands -they do not have the UV resistance that Delstar has. Centauri[Dupont] is also excellent. Some of the lower priced ones also as well as fading-do not respond well to color sanding and buffing-WHICH IS A MUST for a nic eoriginal appearance finish....I agree the 2 and 3 stage finishes are too slick- Imron was mentioned -it has so many downs its not a good choice .super hazard to the lungs- It is super tough and so shiny that you have to sand it to apply a graphic or decal to it!! it even sheds grafitti if its vandalized! HOW about "Valspar brand"- any comments????
Valspar is a 2 stage, but you can do it without the clear and it works OK. I got some in the garage. its good paint, gonna slather it on a '34 Coupe one of these days.
I've seen a guy on ebay selling lacquer labelled as "boat paint". Not too many color choices, but cheap.
DAR 9000 is still available according to the PPG North American Website for refinishers. Its Delstar Acryilc Enamel. If you add the urethane hardener it becomes Delthane. Look for another source if you really want Delstar, its out there. If you want to shoot PPG, the Concept 2K line is available in a single stage urethane for solid colors. If your on a tight budget the PPG's el-cheapo Omni line offers OK paint for OK prices, including acrylic enamels (the Omni AE line). I've used it. If your used to shooting Ditzler single stage acrylic enamel from the late 70's and early 80's through a conventional gun then you'll feel right at home shooting this stuff. -Bigchief.
Thanks Big Chief- My main thing with Omni was it seemed to fade.....chalk easily. Maybe the solids like Black would not do that,But a mixed color with any clear in it seemed to fade.....
haven't been able to get it here in years.......that's why i hoard, i still have 1 qt of delstar black left. i'll have to look around, there's a guy thats ells paint at the swapmeet.
Hey, Can ya still get RM Super Max? This product, with it's own hardner and their 61 slow reducer, flowed like Delstar and didn't require much colour sanding ''if'' ya shot it correctly. S****ey Devils C.C.
Yup. Omni is budget oriented stuff for sure. The silver metallic I shot for my buddies truck two years ago is still doing fine in the Cincinnatti sun with minimal upkeep....maybe waxed once since the paint was shot. Have you checked out Martin-Senior available at your local NAPA? Years ago we used to shoot it on a fleet of logging trucks we built/maintained. It was "OK" back then. Since NAPA is geared toward the do-it-yourself'r you might have luck with old style acrylic enamel there. -Bigchief.
dupont du-co enamel..its an industrial paint used on alot of tanks and towers comes in most any gloss or finish about three coats and it will stay on better than imron comes in some cool matte colors too!
Check out these guys............http://stores.ebay.com/Auto-Paint_W0QQcolZ2QQdirZ1QQdptZ0QQftidZ2QQtZkm Also, I've used the "implement enamel" with acrylic enamel hardener on race cars, and it doesn't chalk, is hard as hell, and stays shiny.
i have always liked dupont, centari. my best paintjobs have been code 99a black centari.. this is my old truck its centari. i painted my merc in base clear last year dark green, i didnt harden properly and i got some chemical pop. im sure it is my own fault, but iether way its getting stripped and repainted you guessed it 99A black centari!
I bought two gallons of PPG Acrylic Lacquer while I was in Cincinnati, at Kentucky Motors 859-292-7743. Mutt
This tread is OLD AS HELL, but since pimpin paint was here I think Ill add to it in the even that people still want info. Centari is no longer an option, so next in line for a cheaper paint is Nason Ful Cryl II single stage acrylic enamel. Its catalyzed and o-k, but for the budget painter that want EASE OF USE rather than high quality I would go with Nason Ful Thane its a single stage urethane not quite as brittle and hard as acrylic enamel but a little more chemical resistant. If I can spray it.... so can you! I like both, but I am not a painter and don't have the nerve to buy Imron.
