I was told some gl*** shops have patterns that they can cut new gl*** for cl***ic/antique cars. The shops have what are called "NAGS" Patterns ( National auto gl***) Interesting - If you know about this, please fill us in.
they are thin pieces of cardboard or thick poster board, with all the gl*** patterns for a certain make/model car on them. my friend has one whole rack for just storing his.. lots of cars, lots of patterns!!
yep - had to put new gl*** all around in my 56 Willys 4x4 wagon (sbc). Of course, it was all flat work, but the guy had the patterns on hand, and was done in less than a day - this was several years ago at a gl*** shop in Lake City area of Seattle. dj
Are these patterns unavailable now to gl*** shops? Were they put out years ago and are in demand /hard to come by item today? Just wondering the history and current status of such for us car guys needing gl*** for our cars just hpw rare this specialty item is.
Not very rare. At one time every gl*** shop had them Only valuable to the guy /shop who has the ability to cut the gl*** or to someone who can't make their own patterns. Based on your question I guess you found the local guy who has them for sale??? there were a large collection of them avalable localy.
Used to be available. you could buy a full set for 1500-2000 bucks then get all the new ones every year for a couple hundered. by 1964 most of detroits cars went to all curved side gl*** and we were paying 250 for a hand full of mostly big truck patterns and everyone quit buying. I have over 15,000 gl*** patterns going back to 1918. please don't tell anyone. I really like my Simplifier pattern table. would love to have a couple more. it's 5000 patterns on a roll and takes up very little room. mine covers foreign and domestic from 1954-1964 the first NAGS book was 1942 same year I was born. Before that were paper patterns. really hard to work with 80+ years old paper patterns are fragile and break if bent.
the gl*** shop i use has many of the nags patterns AND the book to look up the pattern numbers. that is important because the patterns just have a number on them. i have patterns for `33 Ford 3-window , 34 3-window , 32 3-window , 32 5-window and 35/36 3 window
one of the importers buys a windshield for every one of our newest models when they come out, so they can make copies of it... i'm not supposed to know they do it, but it's fairly obvious. i don't care one way or the other; most legitimate gl*** shops can't get by with non-factory gl***. when we look up part numbers for gl***, it often has a NAGS number for reference.
We have all NAGS auto gl*** patterns starting in 1935. We cut to these blue prints and have them tempered for our customers. Green, grey, bronze or clear. We also provide all gl*** for chopped cars and trucks. Curved windshield and back gl*** also. (800)807-1937
I am wondering how to cut windshield and side gl***, as I would like to chop the roof on my 1983 Cadillac coupe Deville, about 2 inches, I bought the book HOW TO CHOP TOPS, said something about sand blasting the inner gl*** of the windshield and gl*** cutter on the outside windshield, nothing on side gl***, wondering anyone out there in hot rod land has done any this cutting before dare to be different. I know that this is an extreme long shot, but would you still have the Nags gl*** patterns for sale.?
Thanks for that. We are a small father and son business in Australia supplying gl*** for cl***ic cars. We are first and foremostly enthusiasts who work every weekend on our three cl***ic cars. We have been supplying gl*** now for 18 months and are building up a good number of templates for our Australian cars, however we have a huge number of American imports over here and very few people actually supply gl*** for them. We pride ourselves in providing a very good product because we know what we would want on our own cars. Any ***istance in obtaining templates would be very much appreciated. Cheers, Rod
can you please let me know if i can buy a set of patterns from you, i've started my own little buisness but i need the patterns, please help
Is every windshield supposed to have a number on it for identification? Is there a link to information about finding the number location on a windshield, especially older ones. Are they always in one place I guess I'm asking...
I have one and a half sets of NAGS patterns plus the index for looking up all the numbers for sale. Call me if you are interested. (763) 413-0237

Do you recall the name of the shop in Lake City? I would like to see if they have a pattern for a 34 Ford Cabriolet windshield.
