I currently have a 1955 272 Y Block with a Ford o matic transmission behind it. Once the car is warmed up I hear a chatter coming from the front of the transmission whenever I hit 3000 Rpm. It shifts and drives fine, doesnt appear to be slipping either. It chatters at 3000 Rpm in park, 2nd, 3rd and neutral?

Motor and Transmission are all original and I cannot seem to find the source of the problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all for your time.

Might be the flexplate. They were riveted together and over time the holes can enlarge and cause slop which will "chatter". You can try bolting it or welding it together or get a 1957 up plate which was one-piece.

That was my first thought, but from what I have read the rivet chatter happens at a lower rpm and does it all the time. Mine only seems to start after about 5 min of driving and does not go away until the car has cooled down again.

Might not be ****** related. Could also be exhaust pipe contacting frame or transmission linkage knocking off of something. What shape are your motor and transmission mounts in?

I checked all the linkage and the exhaust to be sure, but it still sounds to me as if it is coming from inside the front of the ******. Thanks for you help.

It may be the torque converter.

Is there anyway for me to check and make sure the torque converter is working properly? Or to possibly narrow down the problem?

I use a stethoscope to pinpoint noises. Have someone rev the engine and touch different spots on the engine and trans. You will find the source of the noise.

Still looking for the problem and have some new info to add. When driving the car in 3rd gear at 55 mph I am at 3000 rpm. It has 29" tires and I was told it has 3.50 gears. When I jack up the rear and rotate the wheel it tells me I have a 2.75 gear. IF of theses are correct I have a ton of slipping going on??? However other than the chatter at 3000 rpm the car shifts and drives perfect?
I used an online calculator and it says I should be at about 2000rpm?

    Thanks again for any help.

Well I found out that my tach was incorrect and now the RPM makes sense. The chatter comes in around 2000rpm now and still have not found the source.

I now believe that it is the rivets that hold the flywheel to the TC. I can move it back and forth about 3/16 of an inch. I have seen that people are using the Tee Bird Products part. Does anyone have any knowledge of this swap??
