Running a 12 volt alternator with a 6 volt blower motor? Huh...?

Well I know that I would like some 12 volt items in my car (air bags, hidden radio, etc..) but I won't convert the whole system to 12v. I was thinking of using a 6v blower motor with a pully and constructing a mount in the trunk that would hold a 12v alt. With a flick of a switch I could run 12v items or charge a 12v bat. Does this sound wacky? To me it makes sense but what do I know?
    Whaddya think?

no, it won't work. it can work, but the battery would have to have a separate ground, things would be way complicated, and then there is the inefficiency, power used to power produced, resistance, friction, heat loss, its more trouble than it could be worth.

You can use two 6V batteries with diodes to acheive your desired effect.

Diodes allow current to travel one direction...

They can be used to convert AC current to DC too.

Just run everything at 12v, you'll save yourself a lot of heartache. Most electric components like blower and window motors can handle it - they'll just work really fast. :D

i had some diagrams once but can't find them. Basically a diode allows current to flow one way but not the other. let me see if I can find those diagrams.....it's much easier with pictures!

Ya, convert to 12 volt. If your wires are good, you do not have to rewire the entire thing, like I have been doing off and on for over a year now....

Maybe run a 12V alternator off the driveshaft like in the "alternator off the driveshaft" post. Since your not running the whole car 12V, and nothing 12V is of real importance to the operation of the car(cept maybe the bags), you wouldnt have to worry to much if it starts to run low.
