Garage driving my pickup this afternoon and gonna be a tough ride with the stock tank and seat. Looking for options besides buckets for the seat. Has anyone chopped the seat springs, bottom and back, of originals to lower/relocate it ? I would like to retain the stock tank but may have to relocate to the rear to get some ride comfort. What other options are available? Pics always welcomed.
What is it you do not like about the stock position? I have mine stock but not using the under the seat tank. I cut one half of the top off and put all my electrical in it.
On my last 3 deuce pickups chopped 2.5, 4, and 3 inch's respectfully, I used the stock tank with the top cut out as a seat riser with the bottom cushion made out of about 3 inch's of very firm foam over plywood covered in a nice leather, the cushion had about a one inch thicker roll in the front 6 inch's. I did the same thing for the back but made the cushion 1.5 inch's thick with the same roll at the top using a little softer foam. I'm 6.2/240 lbs and I fit although I admit I wouldn't want to drive them on a 1000 mile trip! I never drove the 3 inch chop so can't say. I'm just starting another 32 truck and depending on the theme I am thinking of using a Frank Wallic bomber bench seat made for pus.
It puts me too high as well as forward leaving a cramped space to drive in. My thoughts were to basically halve the height of the bottoms as well as the back to gain some space.
I looked at them as well and had a Glide in my roadster. Pricey seat and would have to relocate the tank as well. Anyone using one in their pickup?
I pulled the tank in my 32 pickup and did away with the original seat,I'm 6'4" and 240 and it sit too high. We made a seat riser that was a little lower and fabricated a plywood and foam seat. I installed the heat & air under the seat along with the fuse box.HRP
The back panel can be just a 1/2" thick ply panel with inch or inch and a half thick foam , you really don't need much padding there as the seat back will be pretty upright. If you have the stock base you could tie down the stock springs with two or three heavy zip ties each spring, should pull them down about two- three inches, then upholster., or remove the tank and put it in the p***enger car spot( which is what I'm doing) and make a shorter , angled riser. You know, of course, 34 pu moved gas tank to back. moved firewall forward and made a 1 inch body line across back of cab to slant top of seat back. Good Luck, I like those trucks, but they have gotten smaller as I got older...
Yeah I knew all that before getting the 32 but am still thinking I can make it work. Not planning a lot of cross country rides but would like to make the ROG.
We sculpted the foam padding and plywood where my seat is not straight up and down so I have a little more padding lower on the back and it has a taper to it. "Fruit Salad" seat cover was gonna be temporary but after 7 years doesn't look live I'm in a hurry to change it. HRP
More than happy to build you one. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/...model-a-rollpans-bengels-hot-rod-prod.615201/
