I have been a long time stalker, posted a few times. I have a dilemma and honestly this was the first and only place I thought of that would probably be helpful. I acquired (lol) a 1963 Panel. The gas tank is full-0-rust with holes all in it. dropping it out, it's a tank off something else that was 'retro fitted' to fit. NO tag on it whatso ever and they changed the sending unit to fit yet it looks like a newer tank. The neck is not in the right spot but they made it work. I'm trying to find one with the neck in the right spot or close to where it needs to be. ( about 9 1/2" on drivers side from lip on tank) Everything I have looked up that could possibly work is too deep, too long, too wide, and/or the neck is WAY off. Most of the 'conversion' tanks (which are Blazer/suburban tanks would require cutting my chassis which is something I don' want to do. Yes, I know with hot rods there is modification, fabrication, etc. I have it in my shop to get it running so I can pull it in and out of my shop in between on working on customers cars. and OF COURSE when I do this, a customer wants to bring in a car for us to finish. I am trying to find the easy/simple. I know I can use a fuel cell, but if I can find a factory style tank it would be awesome. I know I sound all over the place but in my head it sounds right .....lol If someone can identify this tank, that would be awesome b/c it fits perfectly. (photo to follow)
Well, that sounds so simple. The rear mount option for the pickup: the top fill would come through the bed or I can put it through the plate. but don't wanna drill through the wood in the rear (not yet anyway) The side option is a possibility but will not fit where I need it. Let me share. Tank that came out: 10" high tank itself minus lip= 26 1/2 wide & 24 1/2 Deep side tank option from LMC=13x19x30 won't fit in my hole (dirty thought) Yeah, upon my research prior to posting here is what has led me here lol TY for the though though pork'n LMC, Brothers, Ecklers, Classic industries, JC Whitney no go other than 'conversion'
I think she's saying that she can't find a stock tank. They 're not reproduced, and used ones are scarce. I don't recognize it....and I don't have any good suggestions, although a 70s Suburban/Blazer tank might be made to fit. I put one in a 57 pickup, I had to trim the frame rails and play with the crossmembers. The filler tube went over the frame. The sender would be the wrong resistance, etc...but look into it? http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.php?pk=971293&cc=1295973
If LMC doesn't have the parts then try here: http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=2&cad=rja&uact=8&sqi=2&ved=0CDwQoAIwAQ&url=http://www.oldchevytrucks.com/&ei=xL6AVM6sHMmfyAT2oILYBA&usg=AFQjCNE-kKiYriKvht0Y1oPeCcJEu4gw0w&bvm=bv.81177339,bs.1,d.cGE This is Jim Carters and he keeps a warehouse full of used and NOS parts for that era truck. May have to call and talk to someone.
If you look below what you quoted, you will see where I put the dimensions of what theirs is vs what I need. Also, upon calling them, the chassis would have to be cut in order for it to fit which is something I do not want to do (as stated initially) If you can find me a stock one, please show me b/c the stock one would work if it was actually MADE. thank you come again lol
I have noticed that the one that came out that someone put in, they changed the sending unit to be the 0-30 ohms so that would not be a problem. I will look TY Squirrel
This one could work b/c of the hole depending on the size, but shit, look at the price WTF http://www.ecklerstrucks.com/chevy-or-gmc-truck-gas-tank-steel-frame-mount-1963-1972.html
If you want an application and ID on your old tank to get a replacement, put up a "help ID gas tank" thread and someone is going to know. Try looking at JEEP fuel tanks. They fit almost anywhere
Check out the pics at the bottom of this link. They used a 59/60 Chevy passenger car tank. Might be worth a shot. http://talk.classicparts.com/showthread.php?t=54
I had a similar problem a while back and found with an internet search, that there are generic hot rod gas tanks available in various sizes. I think the one I needed was $80 vs $200 for one the same size, made for a specific car. (the one I needed was not available). Measure the space and see what you can find online that will fit. At worst you might have to have a rad shop relocate the filler neck.
Rusty. Thank you for that. I have been looking online by size but most are by application. That is why I was also asking about identifying the tank to give me an idea of what it is to narrow my search lol The search continues though. I'm not giving up. Last resort fuel cell or fabricating. I don't want to cut my chassis. If I can help it =)
You might also look at the web site www.gastanks.com. They list the dimensions for each tank. I looked around on the site a little but didn't know the max. size that might work.
We need pictures of your chassis.....throw in one of your truck too! Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
I have measurements in the original post vs the photo of the chassis. I had to push it out for a customers skylark to come in. Once I get it back in an my rack free (have a truck on that) I will photo the chassis. All the pieces, fender, new rubbers, old doors, new rockers etc are in it. So THAT is a bonus
