Most of the old timers can think of a hometown favorite '32 that was on the street or strip when these featured cars were getting to be known ... I, for one, can remember a Victoria in town that had the one of the first Chevy V8 swaps in this area, done in the summer of 1955, just as nice as some in the RnC list ... 302
I wonder how many of those on display will actually be Ford bodied cars on Ford frames. I'm thinking most all of the newer ones won't be. I can see Ford wanting to capture history and contemporary designs, but I would think they would want to showcase cars that were actually built by them 74 years ago.
I was kinda hoping to see Ken Schmidt's or Keith Cornell's (Rolling Bones) salt-encrusted 3-windows listed. Maybe they're right after Tommy's muddy road-duster.
I was surprised to see that the old Norm Wallace roadster(currently owned by Larry Hook)didn't make the cut.It made Pebble Beach a few years ago and the cover of HRM in 1958.
This was cut and pasted from the Ford Motor Company release.. http://media.ford.com/newsroom/release_display.cfm?release=22443 "THE 75 Most Influential 32 Ford Hot Rods" were selected by a blue-ribbon committee of automotive authorities across a variety of fields. Museum participants include: Greg Sharp, curator, Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum; Philip Linhares, chief curator of art, Oakland Museum of California and **** Messer, director, Petersen Automotive Museum . Authors and journalists on the committee include Steve ****an, publisher, The Rodders Journal; John Dianna, publisher, American Rodder; Kevin Elliott, former editor of the British publication, Custom Car; Pat Ganahl, journalist and author of "Hot Rods & Cool Customs," "Von Dutch: the Man, Myth & Legend," and "Ford Performance;" Robert Genat, author, "Hot Rod Milestones," "Little Deuce Coupe" and "The Birth of Hot Rodding;" Ken Gross, journalist, author of "Hot Rod Milestones" and chief judge of the Pebble Beach Concours dElegance hot rod cl***; Mark Morton, publisher, Hop Up; Tony Thacker, author, "32 The Deuce;" and Tom Vogele, vice president/group publisher, Primedia. Car builders, designers and enthusiasts who participated include musician and hot rod collector Jeff Beck; Roy Brizio, Brizio Street Rods; Pete Chapouris, So-Cal Speed Shop; legendary hot rodders Ray Brown, Pete Eastwood, Blackie Gejeian, Jim "Jake" Jacobs and Thom Taylor; Jerry Kugel, Kugel Komponents; show promoter Robert Larivee, Sr.; Barry Lobeck, V8 Shop; Gary Meadors, Goodguys Rod & Custom ***ociation; and builder/historian David Simard. Funny how a LOT of the folks on the selcetion committee ended up on the 75 cars chosen list.....Hmmm Jeff Beck Andy Brizio Roy Brizio Ray Brown Pete Chapouris Steve ****an Pete Eastwood Jerry Kugel Barry Lobeck To list a few..... I am surprised that the Ken Gross roadster was NOT on the list...... Not to take away from the 32's listed OR the members on the selection committee .....but it does make one wonder....if you could have put your own 32 on the ballot ( or your buddies ) Disclaimer ...of sorts there were 475 folks doing the selection. I guess I am going to have to start saving a few extra FUN STAMPS $$$ so I can go from South Carolina to California for the 2007 Roadster Show.
You are correct...... and I stand corrected .. Then lets ADD his name to the list of folks doing the picking that got picked ...
I was checking the list & Don Williams' Chopped & Channelled 5w from the cover of Nov '51 Hot Rod is not included . Also Don Tognotti's 'Avenger' 5w is not included . These are two of the coolest 5w ever, Oh well!
I'm not sure I could list 75 significant Deuces, but the Don Williams Coupe would be at the top of my list. Really surprising to see its not even included...
As a long time DEUCE owner, I can come up with 75.....and MOST of them....are on the list already Here's my TOP 10... not in any order... 1) The **** Scritchfield Roadster...... Number #1 LA Roadster car, subject of many magazine articles, Bonneville Record holder. 2) The Tom McMullen Roadster.....the original ....subject of many magazine articles, cover car........was the start of Street Rodder magazine. 3) The Joe Nitti Roadster .....timeless, FAST and beautiful 4) The Edelbrock Roadster ...much history, Bonneville and a AMBR winner 5) The Gray Baskerville Roadster...subject of many magazines Like the roadsters above....MADE folks want a 32 Roadster .. 6) The " Chili Catallo " 5 window better known as the Beach Boys coupe 7) The Neal East Roadster.........cover of R&C 1961..... 8) The Doyle Gammell 3 Window....super car, super stance....screamed Hot Rod and look at me.... 9) The Wayne Henderson Victoria.....Best Looking Victoria I ever saw.....no question about it...way ahead of it's time in ATD.. 10 ) The Doane Spencer Roadster .....what can be said....it is a inspiration. the Alternate The Don Thelan Vicky..... The two Victorias are the newest builds on my list. A lot of good 32's were not on my list ( nor the preferred offical Top 75 list ) .....like Jack Stewart's Red 32 Roadster. Ever bit as influential as some on the Top 75 list. The 32's I chose are the cars that affected me the most......either in person or in print. The AG coupe in not on my list. It is a definate Top 75 car....but did not affect me all that much...I was already a 32 nut. .
6) The " Chili Catallo " 5 window better known as the Beach Boys coupe I bet you just hit the wrong key because you know that's a 3 window- Also it's the only car on your list I would swap for Barry Lobeck's Roadster. To me the "Beach Boy Coupe" is not memorable because of it's raw beauty as a '32 Ford. It could have been ANY brand of car with those mods and been just as impactful. The fact it is synonomous with the mega popular Beach Boys song that was in the hands of so many hot rodders is what makes it memorable. It's not the kind of car that matches your list of '32s that are beautiful for being '32s. I saw the list of OVER 400 cars and all the ones you could ever think of and quite a few you wouldn't are on there. List don't make them special if you know in your heart it's your favorite.
Well put Jim.I would only add one more(I'm sure there are MANY more I can't recall at the moment)and that would be Fran Hernandez' 32 3 window that graced the cover of Hot Rod Magazine in April 1949(the first coupe ever accorded that honor)but I guess I'm prejudiced on that one as he is my wife's ex-father in law and still going strong at 82(83 on February 8th).
Absolutely, no argument here. I think the McGee/Scritchfield roadster would be my second with the Khougaz rounding out my top three. First coupe would probably be the Gammell coupe.
Is there a difference between 5W and a 3W ? Yes, I just typed wrong. I actually had the pleasure of having breakfast with Mr. Catallo a couple times, a few years ago. He was at the NATS with a friend of a friend. Very nice guy..down to earth ....and sadly....gone..... The 32's on my list affected me.....and that's what made my Top 10.....and meeting " Chili Catallo " was most likely influencing my little list. I also met Gray Baskerville when he took photos of my 32 Roadster at Pigeon Forge. Most likely another influence........he was a nice guy....When I was at the SOCal party for the LA Roadster party the next year.......he walked up and called me by my name...I was shocked..... .
You are absolutely right Jim. Different cars mean different things to different people... So here is another kind of list. The 3 Deuces that have had the most influence on me. Don Williams Coupe. First image I saw of the car was a artists rendering, and it has been my favorite Deuce from that day on. The ****era 3W. That car got to me, almost like the Williams Coupe did. Still one of my favorites. The stance, and the one off parts lil John built for it... ( Why is it so hard to find pics of this car? ) The Project car that was built by Tony Thacker for Custom Car, in '84. It was a cool car, but it made me realise ( also because of Tony's writings ), that the Billet style was a dead end. At least for me...
O' Enlighted Ones! I'm sorry but half of them I didn't recognised . Maybe because I'm still a bit green and uneducated . I didn't see the Pacific Gunsight Special, Bob Schaeneman's or the Woodward/East/Moller 32's there, did you?
