Hey all, I have some paint graphics that I want to remove from a g***er, the art is cool but it is from the previous owner and does not pretain to the car (or owner) anymore! I would like to do something different and I might even keep some of the art work and modify it to fit myself. The paint is a Matrix single stage enamel, hand letteried & pinstriped with "one shot" paint. Is there an effective way to remove the pinstriping without effecting the enamel paint underneath?
There is no EASY way to remove 1-Shot once it has set up.There is a good chance that it has embedded itself in the base paint and removal of the upper part will leave a "shadow" outline of the letters. Also attempts at removal might cut into the base paint and once the outer shell of enamel has been breached it will usually deteriorate pretty rapidly. If you still want to try it,I would recommend getting a product called," Meguiar's Heavy Oxidation Remover".It is used primarily to revitalize gel coats on fibregl*** boats. Most auto parts stores will carry it;it comes in a blue bottle(marine product)as opposed to the maroon automotive stuff. Take a soft rag and dampen it a bit with wax & grease remover and put a small amount of the Meguiar's on the rag and rub gently but firmly across the lettering in a diagonal pattern.Check to see if the material is coming off.Continue this process and change the rag surface frequently to avoid scratching the surface. If this works and it removes the lettering, then you can lightly buff the surface but be careful not to break through the outer layer. No guarantee this will work but I have had some success doing this in the past.
I removed pinstripe flames off a '34 I had years ago at a coin op car wash but that was sign painter enamel over lacquer.
Oven cleaner will do the job but, you have to stay with it and rub lightly as the chemical cuts into the lettering enamel. do a google search on removing painted lettering. There is some good tips and tricks on the web.
I'd say the biggest obstacle is the fact that you're dealing with single stage paint that appears to have a metallic finish . Any type of sanding or rubbing using an abrasive is going to damage the metallic finish. IMO I'd get a good color match and do a re-paint on the fenders and tailgate , then if you still want some striping , call your favorite striper .
