My son has a 91 Buick Century and can't get the rotor off. He has the caliper off and has cleaned the hub area in the center but it will not budge. Any and all ideas are welcome. I'm not much help as I have only Fords. It looks like it should come off but it won't. Is there a special puller for this? Many thanks, Charles in Pensacola
BFH......It is rusted to the hub. Wail it a time or two,it'll come off. Please don't tell me you are doing a "one wheel brake job".........Tell me you ARE going to do BOTH rotors.........the life you save may be MINE
Oh, they can and will seize on the hub pretty good sometimes! (If it is the kind that simply slips over the hub and lug studs). I've had to actually cut or torch them off before! I don't know how your particular car is configured, but inspect the hub closely. It may require that you remove the kotter pin and nut at the center of the hub to remove the rotor. Most front-drivers I've encountered use a "slip on" style of rotor held in place by the caliper and the wheel, but they can be a real nightmare to get off in some cases, as I said! Before you break out the big sledgehammer, torch, prybar and hand grenades, consult a repair manual or someone who knows your type of car to see if there isn't anything else holding it on!
Thanks for the quick reply. Yes we are doing both but both are stuck. He was told by mechanics that it just slips off. We have been tapping but may resort to wailing shortly.
That happened to me with my Jeep I had. I wailed on it with a hammer with no luck. I ended up using a Hi-Lift jack to pry them both off the rear. It worked.
If they are stuck so bad they won't come off with a tap or two, your prolly gonna need new ones any way,so don't be nice to them...........and yes, those ARE the slip on kind......try to avoid using heat if at all possible. It's real easy to get carried away and damage the seals in the wheel bearings.
We see this all the time at the shop. If you wail on them too much you're gonna bend the hub. Attack it with a sawzall & then hammer it. New rotors are cheap.
Poor guy still has that thing up on blocks... It must be rusted more solid than the tin man. He hasn't posted since.
i'm sure it was fixed, and if it is still on the road, is driving around florida below the speed limit, in the p***ing lane with the left turn signal on, dragging the p***enger seat belt that is caught in the door.
