My 16 year old son and I have been working on a 1948 Prefect gasser project for about 2 months now. Last spring we bought a stocker out of a small yard in Texas. My son really wanted to build a gasser style car. So we set in on this one. Since it will be his I have put a $7000 limit on it, and so far I think ee can make it. All the work is being done by my son Andy and myself. I built a rear tube chassis with narrowed 9" and ladder bars, I narrowed and modified a 1947 ford car front suspension. It will have a basic 350/350 combo. 8 point cage etc. Still a long way to go but we are making good headway. He wants to drive it to graduation in may 2016.
The Prefect is a cool car anyway,a gasser is just the logical step, you and your son are doing a great job! HRP
Ive done a lot of hustling and trading etc. So far we are just above $4000, including the rebuilt 350/350 combo, tires wheels etc. Paint, glass, plumbing and fasteners are the only real purchases left. I work in a sheetmetal shop so the floors etc are going to be cake! And they are 450 Holleys but the need a complete rebuild. They were in a mild engine fire at one time. Need a distributor as well.
Boy I like the little car and if anybody wants one like it had a guy start one at my shop he quit and its for sale. Old race car with a history HiHO Silver a 48 prefect 56 Olds rear wieght bar a real old gasser from Arizona ran on beeline drag strip injector and 2 sets of header big and small block PM me
We are building it to drive on the street. But if its not too squirrely we would like to race it at a few Gasser events and nostalgia drag events.
Looking very good, you don't see many shoestring budget builds anymore. It's great to build something with your son. He will never forget it.
Andy definately wants to go to the HAMB drags. We have been watching many videos of the Meltdown drags. We plan to take our 40 delivery there this year to spectate. The Prefect probably will not be ready until spring 2016.
I like father/son projects. I got my youngest son a basket case when he was 13 (he's 40). He saw it through to completion. We still have it. It was one of the best bonding tools in our relationship. We both learned to give-n-take because of it. I recently started a second Anglia "tribute car". Like its predecessor I will be using a "Chuck Finders style" tube frame. Yours is well on its way to being a sweet gasser style hot rod.
