My wife wants to take a trip down to Memphis this spring or summer. Does anyone know of any shows going on to plan the trip around? Car shows, swap meets, rockabilly shows, etc..
WHY? There are many nicer places in TN. I've lived here since '84 and other than BBQ and a few historical sites, it's the pits. Corrupt city gov't, distressed urban blight, unbelievable racial polarity, stupid and inept mayor and city council. You can see everything you need to see in one day, two at the most. Graceland, Sun Records, Corky's BBQ, The Peabody Hotel, Pink Palace. Oh yeah, also the home of Walker Radiator. No major car things except the Bunny Run in Jackson (80 mi)in the spring. Too miserably hot and humid in the summer. Go to Nashville or Knoxville instead. Good thing I don't work for the C of C.
Well those are the things she wants to see. I was hoping for some kind of car show/swap meet or something to make the trip a little more fun.
Oops, forgot the Memphis in May hoo-rah. Lots of entertainment and the world cl*** BBQ cookoff by the river. Also the Ornamental Metal Museum. Great rotating and visiting displays. Also an amazing working and teaching smithy with 6 working forges and on-going cl***es by pros. You ain't done it until you forge iron with fire and a hammer.
This is a good show, it's huge. George Poteet brings some of his goodies. It's really hot though..... http://memphisstreetrods.com/
Don't forget to go down to Mudd Island and visit the "Memphis Belle" and maybe even take a DUKW tour.
If you got an hour to spare, go down Summer Ave to 2nd Hand Speed. He's got all kinds of parts at good prices. It's in the phone book, and you can see the shop from Summer Ave, near Interstate 40, Nashville exit area, off Avon street.
