It's been awhile since I posted in this forum. I have a 54 Club Coupe and am finally getting back around to working on it. I bought a running 302 engine out of a 76 F100 pickup and have a C4 transmission I'm planning on using. What have ya'll used for the motor mounts and transmission mounts during this swap? Thanks for any help. 20140208_103622_resized_1 by clips221 posted Jun 23, 2014 at 6:49 PM
This will show you what to do: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/media/albums/289-302-351w-swap-mounts.41498/ READ the comment below! DO NOT buy mounts made in India or China because the rubber is so bad mounts are failing in less than a year.I suggest these:http://www.ebay.com/itm/290997379867?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT and this: http://www.jegs.com/i/Prothane/311/6-1605-BL/10002/-1?parentProductId= Both are USA made and contain no outsourced rubber. You can also use these these:http://www.ebay.com/itm/Hedman-8840...Parts_Accessories&hash=item5406c710d8&vxp=mtr You might ask JEG's if they will price match on those
I'm not sure of the oil pan configuration on your donor 302 it needs to be like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1965-87-Sma...Parts_Accessories&hash=item20d04ac8ef&vxp=mtr and you need a matching front dipstick and timing cover. Can you post some pix of the 302? Also what rear end will you be using? If you use the stock one and it was a stick shift car you will hate the C4.
I will post pics of the engine this afternoon. Car had a ford-o-matic transmission originally. I will be using the original rear end for now. thanks for all the help.
Here's a couple of pics of the 302 engine I'll be using. will get some better pics when I get it on the engine stand 20140716_200003_resized by clips221 posted Jul 17, 2014 at 7:52 AM 20140716_195939_resized by clips221 posted Jul 17, 2014 at 7:52 AM
OK, Good news! looks like the front sump pan is a go,also if you want to save some bucks your manifolds will clear the steering box really well, just toss that canister gizmo on the drivers side. For better clearance on the p***enger side get this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Ford-Mi...Parts_Accessories&hash=item1e6d43c98c&vxp=mtr Also it will crank a whole lot better than the old style large starter.Your Ford-O-Matic Column will work with the C-4 too check out this from Don Allen on the linkage mods to hook up your shifter: http://mainlineford.wordpress.com/
I ordered these motor mounts that were suggested in post #4 here. These have some alignment holes in them. how does this work with the slots in the original engine mounting tabs in the car? can I just cut the tabs off? any helps appreciated. http://www.ebay.com/itm/29099737986...38.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&rmvSB=true
I would think that your zip wheel would make quick work with removing the studs,,you don't need them. HRP
These pictures should help: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/media/albums/289-302-351w-swap-mounts.41498/
When I replaced my Anchor motor mounts with these I didn't pull my engine so elongating the holes were not a option for me,,so I cut the studs with no adverse effects. HRP
had a friend over today that's gonna help me with the motor and transmission swap. I've gotta change the motor pulleys and my C4 is set up for floor shift.. He's got another set of pulleys as well as what ever has to be swapped in the transmission. He was concerned that the cross bracing under the car would have to be cut out or modified... Is this a concern or should the transmission and engine drop right in. I've bought the good engine and transmission mounts mentioned in the post above. any helps appreciated. Craig
You should not have to cut anything underneath, my '54 has an AOD which is slightly larger than the C4 and no cutting was done.In the past there has been a few cases where the transmission cross member's holes may need re-drilling and this is due to the inaccuracy in manufacturing at the factory,as you have seen on builds done on car shows it's a good idea to do a trial fit by installing engine and transmission as a unit then you can make the adjustments easy.
Cool, another 54 coupe! I am in a similar build with mine. I look forward to seeing yours, please keep us updated.
