Every year about this time,I start thinking about going to this event---never made it yet. Looking for advice as to is it worth a 1400 mile drive, where to stay,etc---all responses and info will be greatly appreciated.

We start thinking about going to this event about a week after it's over, and haven't missed one yet. Of course it's more like a 40 mile drive:rolleyes:.
I there is any way you can pull it off, I heartily recommend you do so.

got within 116 miles a few years ago. (I'm 1,800 miles away). Caught pneumonia, went into sepsis. 10 days in the hospital ICU and on dialysis for 4 days. Undeterred, I'm gonna get there.. Heading down when I get the woodie finished. So look out Texas, I"LL BE BACK!

I never miss it. It is well worth the effort if you can make it.

  12. I'd drive it, I've only missed 2. As far as where to stay I'd suggest staying in the downtown area. That will keep you pretty central to everything. I don't remember who it is, maybe Marcie, always sets up a block of rooms. Keep your eyes peeled for details on the LSR threads. If you get in on Thursday, the Meatheads have a BBQ get together and on Friday morning there is usually a garage crawl that is worth participating in. To sum it up gas up the car and come on down

A friend and I went for the first time last year, We recently retired and have a lot of extra time. We had a blast, people were friendly, cars were cool. Loved the bands ( I didn't know what Rockabilly was till we were there).Good food stands, the only complaint is the traffic can get pretty bad.We already have room reservations for 2015.

I will be going for my first time this year in the Gentleman's Coupe which will be finished just in time.

Looking forward to BOTH the journey and the event.

Besides, BBQ, some friends (richardD and Sam Navarro) and affordable parts shipping AKA ups/fedex ground

The LSRU is one of the only things I miss moving from Texas to Alaska.

If I decide to go,maybe I could meet up with you fellas somewhere. Where do you stay at & on the way do you just find a motel along the way,or do you preregister at places in advance? Also, what day would you be leaving?

You could say I am looking forward to this trip as I canceled a trip to an F1 race to be there in Austin.

They say its as much about the journey as the destination and I suspect this will be a great example of that.

3k miles on a brand new car/engine. Seems rational.

not much talk on hotels.....any suggestion close to s congress?

  25. Use one of the sites like Hotwire and filter the area you want to stay. We've done this for years and almost always stay at the Radisson on SoCo and Chavez, you can walk to the Continental Club in about 15 minutes from there. If you don't want downtown just pick where you want to be, eze peeze.

I am coming from Columbus Ohio, have never been before. The Embassy Suited on S. Congress is booked. The Hampton Inn near the convention center has rooms. Does anyone know if there is a better alternative to this hotel. I only need one room. Thanks Joe Abbott

The Lonestar Roundup is all good. I hope it's warmer this year.

  28. I'm heading down for the first time too. 2k miles round trip in a just built tub! the advice I got was to look for a place near the Capitol or in south austin if you want to be close to the scene.

  29. Everything on South Congress is pricey and or booked. I've got a room at the Super 8 near the airport. It's between the Travis Expo center and South Congress and it's reasonable. I'll keep looking for something near the action (S. Congress) but at least I have a room for now nearby.
