Technical 1952 Chevy truck

I converted my truck from a 6 volt to 12 volt and now it wont start. It sounds like it's running when cranking it over but it won't stay running. Any help would be appreciated. It did run when it was a 6 volt

 

what did you change during the conversion?

 

I bought a kit from vintage auto garage. I changed the generator to an alternator, changed condenser, coil, battery, new plugs, cap, rotor, added some ground straps. I also followed the wiring diagram supplied with the kit.

I suspect the points may be burned. You have to reduce the voltage to the points in a 12 volt conversion.

 

Ok I will try that and see if I can get it to work.

yep. if no ballast resistor between the ignition & the coil, the points will burn up.

 

Did you replace the starter or the contact switch on top of the starter.

 

I will add a resistor tonight. As far as the starter, it is original along with the switch. It cranks over good.

 

If it is running while cranking, but cuts out when the key is returned to the on position; you may have mis-wired the ballast resister circuit. When starting, the ballast resister is byp***ed for more cranking power. Once you position the key in the on (run) position, you revert to the ballast resister circuit (limits current).

 

On this truck it just has an on/ off key switch and a push start pedal. I may have wired it wrong but I followed the wiring diagram. I don't currently have ballast in it but I bought one last night.
