Technical What length steering column for a 41 willys coupe

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by v8flathead, Jan 6, 2015.

  1. I am building a willys g***er and am looking at getting an aftermarket steering column. Does anyone know the length column I would require. The firewall is in the stock location.

  4. Hi guys, Thanks very much, I am looking at a 32inch one for it, so you are both right on the money.
    Again, Thanks.

  6. It's hard to say without considering your seats, the steering wheel you plan to use, or your size. Too many variables, like whether you're 5' 6" or 6' 5" or somewhere in between. Best thing would be to install the seat you're going to use, get a length of PVC pipe the approximate diameter of the steering column, and mock things up with the seat, you in the driver's seat, and the steering wheel you're going to use/

38fordpickup gave good advice, when I did the column for my 38 Chevy it was too long so I had to cut about an inch off of the shaft and cover, no big deal on cutting the mast jacket but I had to have the shaft milled for the double D joint. If I would have just installed the seat and steering wheel I'd have saved a few bucks instead of having my ego damaged one more time by the necessity of doing it over again.
