More often than not it can be done through your insurance company.

  4. Ask your insurance agent for a surety bond. I have done this very thing.

I asked my insurance agent about this awhile ago. She had never heard of it. She has been a friend for 20 years. She asked her boss , nothing. If you figure it out , please post. I am still in need. My next step was to call a "Title service Co.", the type that deals with real estate title issues. I had heard that they do this.

  6. I went through this in California about thirty years ago. I don't remember all of the details but the DMV allowed me to purchase a certificate of deposit from my local bank for the amount and have them as co-owner. I couldn't cash it without their signature. At the end of the required time (a couple of years) they signed it and I redeemed it at the bank. Of course the interest it had earned was mine. There was no cost for a third party to issue the bond. You might inquire if something like this can be done in your state.

In Texas you can get a bond throught an insurance co. Anything under 10K is $125.00. Nothing to getting one done here. I just did one last month.

I did this in Illinois about 20 years ago or so. Went to an Insurance brokerage, not my State Farm agent, and they had it set up quickly.

Try Western Surety represented by most independent insurance agents. Oneof the largest and the agent can issue the bond in his office.

In North Carolina you can do it for a car you have no title for and comes up clean on a cursory search. After a year with no challenge you get your title.

As I understand the Illinois S.O.S. is clamping down on places like Broadway Title. And even if you were to go through Broadway, their application process is much more involved and expensive than it used to be. I've also got a truck that I've been needing to get titled. I'll be looking into this further too. Here's what the S.O.S web site says about it. Stu

my cousin did it on his 68 camaro since the previous owner sold him the car with no title . he went to the dmv and then to the insurance agent .

What he had to do was take the car to the local body shop and have it appraised, then his insurance company issued a bond or however that works on it and he took the paper work to the dmv and got a bonded title .

How it works is , the appraisal was for 4000 dollars so the ins company made up a bond for that amount , and now if someone ever comes out of the woodwork for some reason with the original title , they get the amount it was appraised for instead of the car . I think the 4000 dollar bond cost him like 75 bucks or so through his insurance.

I just had Illinois refuse a clear number matching title for a 27 Ford Neb title . Talked to a lady at secratary of state office (use that term losly) On the phone took 3 days to get her to return my calls. Long story short she told me State was hurting for money and was flagging all titles 48 or older.
She said the problem was seller had signed it off 2 months prior to me making application, wanted me to trailer car to Springfield S.O.S.office to be inspected, told her impossible ,weather,no trailer, wasnt running ,etc. She then told me I would have to get a bonded title ,sent a package of paper work ,needed to be inspected, appraised all by licensed people ,then needed a bond 1 1/2 times the appraised value ,and the state would hold my bond for 3 years after that time I could apply for my money back. I said no thanks and sold it on ebay advertised as NO title .Guy from Missiouri bought it and had a Missiouri title in 7 days. Oh yeah had to send the plates in as they killed them as well. Good luck dealing with Illinois S.O.S.

  19. ...I'm from Illinois also; I keep hearing these stories about the Illinois' hassles with titles; SEMA needs to step in and make it acceptible to the state and the hobbyists how they do this.
The state doesn't realize that every car that gets titled; money is being spent on licence, insurance, parts, paint, gas, oil,tires,.... & on & on...all which bring revenue into the state. By making it difficult to obtain a good title for an old car just defeats the purpose and tee's off the hobbyist.

Not sure about Ill. but here in Minn the DMV will arbitrailarly tell you how much bond you have to post in order to title you streetrod. It doesen't matter that you have all your receipts and full documentation for your parts and car. You need them to be sure but they just say " yep, looks like $20,000 will cover it." Makes no sense at all. I still don't have a clear definition of exactly what the bond is supposed to insure. The closest I can gather is that if during the 3 years the bond is for, someone comes up and claims some part of your car is his they will get paid for it thru the bond. After the 3 yr passes no more claims can be done. It's all yours free and clear. Well not exactly free, it's yours. You will get a green title with the words "bonded title" stamped on it. You will also get "real" Minn state motor vehicle plates. Invaluable, as the car is now only governed by normal state DMV laws. There are no driving restrictions as there are with "collector" or "streetrod" plates. Ironically you will have to go thru a couple of inspections however if the 'kit car' does not have or is not designed for bumpers, fenders, hood etc you don't need them. Do need mufflers and seat belts however.

I just went thru this process last year. It is a real run around and you had best be on your good behavior and answer just yes and no as required and fill out the paperwork just like HS days and above all don't lip off. You will be forgotten about if you do. It is not something to do at the last minute. It took me 8 months.

Ill. is terriable to get a title. I heard about dozen's of problems,I've had some myself. I've talk to people that now there going to title there cars in other states. There digging for money, because the state needs it. We need to vote these people out of office. Isn't sema suppost help? There going to kill the hobby, and make alot of people mad!

  22. Let us not forget that the state does not care a whit about your car. Not one.

Ad to that the enormous problem having to do with stolen cars, and the politicos choose the most expedient route - making it a thorough procedure.

And whom amongst us would like to think that a car could be stolen from California and re-titled in Illinois without much trouble??

You cannot have it both ways.

As far as killing the hobby - do you honestly think that there are three state representatives that even KNOW that there IS a hobby?? And of those three, does even one care??

RUN for office, and stop bitchin'!!

I'm not sure if I am talking about the same thing, but this was how I got my Title. About four years ago I needed a title for a 74' Ghia. State Police had to come out and do a visual inspection of the car and run the vin number to make sure is was not stolen. It came through clear, he printed me the information off his laptop, next day went to DMV and applied for Title no questions asked

I did a bonded title in IL 12/21/2011. The only contact I had with a police officer was to have him (a personal friend) run my serial numbers to be sure they were not in use or reported stolen. There were no forms for that. With a bonded title, you are not suppose to sell the car until after 3 years from the title date. After 3 years, the bonded title becomes the official title for the vehicle, no other claims are valid. Guess I should celebrate, my car is official!

I went through a licensing agency (a place you get IL license plates and title work done).
    1) I needed a signed and dated bill of sale with the car serial number on it, and the price paid. For precaution I took a picture of the car in as purchased condition, though I've not ever needed it.
    2) The agency gave me all the forms, 1 form that had to get the car appraised at a wholesale value, and they had to state the car could be made road worthy. This had to be done by a car dealer licensed to sell cars in the state of IL. (It pays to have friends in the right places.)
    3) I needed a clear picture of the serial number on the car.
    4) I had to get a Surety Bond worth 1 1/2 x the whole sale value of my car. The bonds are sold in $1,000 increments, (at that time, they cost $50/$1,000) and the company I went through required at least a $100 fee. The bonded value of my car at the time was less then the $2,000 minimum fee, the bond was written for one and one half times the wholesale value. The license agency provided the form for the bond.
    5) I made copies of everything, and submitted them through the licensing agency just like buying a normal car and paid the normal fees. I did not get plates at that time.
    6) 2 months, to the day, I received my title. No place on it does it say "bonded title".

The whole experience cost me $100 more then the normal title fees, and was pretty painless. I did have a officer friend run my serial numbers to be sure it was clean, and I do have a friend that is a licensed car dealer in IL, so both those friends probably saved me some money. Gene

  29. Go to the states DMV site and look for the proper form to file for the title, then it is just a matter of paying your insurance company to put up the bond.

Note: I am not sure that all states allow for a bonded title and for whatever reason no one ever seems to know anything about them.

It's usually best to start a new thread from scratch on any subject that you find where the last post on the thread three years and three months old having been done Sept 14, 2010. They other guys just think it's a new thread and throw out a reply to the original thread and never read your reply.

Here the info you are looking for should be in this search of your state's dmv website http://gsa.ilsos.net/search?q=bonde...stylesheet=default_frontend&output=xml_no_dtd
