Such a beautiful roadster, the big Olds looks right at home...............who's got a video of this one?
Pretty car! Of course, I'm partial to the "Kettering" Olds engines. It is still astounding to me how well the old Ford driveline stayed together with the amount of torque the injected Olds pushed through it, especially the keyed axles and hubs. Even with the 8" firm rubber, full air pressure slicks, the '39 tranny and the banjo rear had their work cut out!
Even though I have this issue and remember the roadster, the fact that the big Olds mill was backed by a supposedly weak tranny and rear was forgotten. Looks like it survived just fine. Great job, great post.
I LOVE that style of Altered. Here's a pic of my uncle's AHRA National Record Holder. He bought it in '61 with an injected small block, then dropped a 427 Ford into it in '63 and held the record for three years. Most Altereds at the time, as the one above illustrates, were based on factory rails, a steel body and a 92 or 98 inch wheel base. My uncle's had a tube frame, 112 inch wheel base, and a fiberglass body. Other than the roll bar, the polished tank and the un-polished aluminum sheet firewall, there wasn't any chrome or bright work on the car. Black chassis, black engine block with factory gold valve covers, 1960 Chevy Roman Red paint, white tonneau cover and gold leaf numbers. I'm recreating the car right now. (and am damn grateful he didn't chrome everything!) Ran low 10s or high 9s, at 140mph. (He said "It'd mile-an-hour, but it wouldn't ET for shit.") How cool would it be to have a whole field of cars like this at a race today?
Ok........Did we suddenly time travel foward 3 months or is the cold getting to Joey? A "butterfly wheel scavenged from an AMT Parts Pack (sic)" ? As far as I can tell, this isn't a model car, so I don't THINK April's Fools came early! Joey, I second the Safe travels wish, just drove from Jackson, Mo to deep South Texas to San Diego, and after the crap we hit, I REALLY wouldn't wanna be making that trip.
After driving to OKC many times and knowing the path you may have taken, I hope you missed the horrendous crash on I-94 near Battle Creek..
you shoulda stopped in Harlan iowa and had a glass of my blackberry brandy and looked at my 1939 Deluxe coupe!
Those old timey drag cars are awesome....times have sure changed....makes me giddy to know some of these old cars are still out there and 'intact'...cool ride!
I can't say any more about how bitchin the car is, but up until '97 a lot of that track was still the same. In it's last 8-10 yrs it was the best hookin track short of Norwalk and reportedly the most accurate. My Ca-(cough-cough)-maro covered the 60' better at Detroit than it did at Indy by as much as .2. Ralph and the crew took legendary care of us when it came to the track. Dammit I miss that place...
