Due to the location of the Moon gas pedal in my '32 that I am building I am going to have the rod for the carb to pedal linkage running through the firewall. I have been looking for a "boot" to seal the hole where it will come through. I'm guessing at this time about a one inch hole for a 1/4" dia. rod should be enough for the rod not to bind on the firewall. Any ideas where a person could look for something like this? Kinda new at this old car thing and I don't remember a car that the throttle rod was installed like this. If the pedal could set off to the left of the trans tunnel I could run linkage off of a 60's car, but there is no room. Thanks again for any help. Dennis D

  2. How about a boot from a old style master cylinder?

That's an idea. Wonder about finding one with a small enough hole to seal the rod. Dennis

The boot from the master cylinder as mentioned above is what I am going to use.

The hole is 3/8" diameter, which is perfect for a 1/4" rod.

You don't want to "grab" the rod with the boot and interfere with the action of the throttle.

I have one off a 72 Maverick donor car I parted out.

It has the larger end and a 3 stage step down bellows style going from the larger to the smaller size. Has a nice lip that makes it stay in a properly sized hole in the firewall nicely too.

I have a buddy who uses one on his 27 roadster.

A small sleeve of vac*** hose over the 1/4" rod makes it almost seal perfectly yet still move.

Just make sure you have a good return spring so it doesn't hang up.

Any Ford from the 70's should have one, you won't get one from the parts store ,they used a rubber cap with a hole now if you buy a replacement master cylinder.

You have to go the wrecking yard route, which is OK as the one I took off the Maverick was in brand new condition from being buried inside and under the dash away from sun and weather.

Good topic! Been working putting a Moon pedal in my truck hooked up to a stock linkage that has a rod going thru the firewall. The stock set-up had a felt seal around the rod that needed to go. I was wondering what to use and found this thread - this will work great! This site is awesome!

Military aircraft surplus dealers. Small boots were used around lots of control rods & cables. I may even have a small boot out in my storage shed that would work. When I was a kid building my first rod, I practically lived in salvage yards.

If you're looking for a small bellows or accordian boot try a bicycle or motorcycle. They usually have those on cable ends to seal them up. The bike ones are pretty small, but the motorcycle ones might be the right size.
