Will the spindles off of a late 60's mustang fit the front end of the 56 ford? I have a chance to get a set of spindles off of a 68.

Kevin, 68 mustang and later disc brake spindles can be machined to fit your 56 ford. If you are interested in doing this give me a call. 818 572 5302 Dave

I put 69 Cougar spindles on my 56. I had to change some of the tapered holes in the spindles to make the ball joints and tie rod ends fit. The brakes worked fine, but the steering arms had different geometry . When the car turned corners it scrubbed the inside edge of the outside tire. The front tires only lasted about 2500 miles and the inside was worn so bad the tires were s****. I took the spindles back off the car.

Hi rwd_pete, There is a lot of guys running mustang and granada spindles, and I have not seen any issues with tires being scrubbed off. Is there any chance that there was an alignment issue or a faulty
suspension part? I have friends that have that type of cars 54 fords to 64 fords with granada and or mustang spindles and have thousands of miles with no complaints.

I think Granda spindles are diferent than late '60's Mustang/Cougar. The first time the tires wore I took the car in for an alignment thinking that was the problem. The tech pointed out a loose ball joint and I replaced it and had the car aligned. About 2000 miles later it was happening all over again. The tires at the time were probably about 215/70's on 7x15 Cragars, not really wide tires.
So on the last refurbishment of the car I decided to change up things and put the old spindles back on with Chevelle rotors and made my own home made caliper brackets. They actually are working better than I expected and at the track didn't have any trouble pulling the car down from 100 mph.
The old drum's wheel cylinders always seemed to need honing every year to stop leaks. maybe new cylinders were in order. Back to back track runs did cause some fading too.
I still have the Cougar spindles in the ba*****t and a spare set of 56 spindles I think. I looked at "Can I heat the later steering arms to profile the 56 arms?" but they are quite diferent. I will try to get a picture of the two to show the comparison.
