So I'm shopping for a lone front backing plate to match the '41 plate that I already have, and I've noticed that they are stamped L and R side. They look symmetrical in every way, but surely they stamped them for a reason. Am I missing something? Can I run two "Rights"?
No difference, they can be interchanged. It is speculated that the L and R were for the ***embly line after they had the shoes and cylinders in them. So the ***embler would grab the correct one for that side of the car, without mistake.
It would only matter in the rear because or the emergency brake cable location. Fronts are interchangable as far as I know.
All four stampings are the same...rears of course have the parking brake tube drilled through. All have four holes for cylinder, cylinders use 3 of the 4. I would only avoid mixing pre and postwar on same axles, because they probably have slightly different rates of initial hookup with the different lower mounts.
Parts book shows 1939 to 41 Ford front backing plates have the same part number, 91A-2013. They are interchangeable.
