Wondering if anybody has some helpful hints or tricks in repairing old dash plastic. I have a 41 Mercury & dash plastics are pretty heard to find and if you do they need some type of repair. Mine need small amounts of repair such as cracks from age or discoloration. I'm going to paint them ivory white Krylon to try to mimic the original color. The end cap beside the glovebox I had to build out of different plastics I used wood putty but this wood putty is non hardening so that won't work. Wondering if anybody has any other ideas. have you given any thought to maybe using fibergl***? I would think it would hold up better than that old plastic.
SuperGlue and baking soda.... You can make a 'mold' out of tape/paper, apply the glue then coat with soda. Keep doing this until the area is built up, then file/sand to shape. The soda dries the glue almost instantly. This works well enough that I've used it to replace a plastic latch catch on a motorcycle sidecover where the latch tab was missing completely. Accepts paint just fine. You can reinforce a break by coating the backside with the glue/soda mix, you can even glue in a piece of paper clip if there's room.
As long as you aren't trying to replicate a texture in the plastic, 2 part epoxy works well. The super glue baking soda is interesting Ill have to try that. Get a good repair, body filler, paint.
Have you tried just using body filler such as Rage? Or how about PC-7? Guys have used that successfully on steering wheels.
I have a radio for my car with about 5 push ****ons that are crumbling all to hell. I was thinking about patching them up with model car putty/filler and taking a 2 part latex mould off that to cast new ones in resin. You might have better luck with your larger pieces making a fibergl*** mould and laying up some new gl*** parts. Once you have your moulds made you could sell a few sets too! Lots of good info online about making 1 piece fibregl*** moulds. Might be worth the research time. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Q I ended up using Squadron Green Putty. It's plastic filler for models. I thought about it for a bit and I used to use bondo or putty to "customize" models I built and figured this wasn't far off, it's sandable, paintable, and easy to work with and cheap at $3 a bottle. The round edge piece I reformed using hobby clay underneath as a base to put the putty on top of. Underneath I put putty to dry to have something for the 2 screws to that were broken off. On the other pieces I filled in holes, gouges and where time and sun made. Tomorrow I will do some sanding on it and hopefully they will be presentable enough to put on my dash Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
