I am putting my car in a show and they require the battery to be disconnected. My Inglese EFI states not to use a battery disconnect in the system. My question is can I safely disconnect the battery and not loose any information. In other words, I don't want to have to try and start the car on Sunday night and nothing happens after hooking up the battery. I hope someone knows the answer other than the Inglese Techs.
I like the Hotronics kill switch for issues just like this. By a simply flick of the hidden toggle switch, it kills power to ignition, lights, etc...but it allows for a small fused uninterruptible power feed to critical components that need power for memory. Not to mention, its a great idea for eliminating battery drain during storage, fire safety if you are present during a wiring meltdown, and a possible theft deterrent if hidden well enough.
wire up a small 9 v battery pack to the memory lead for the ecu ( buy a memory saver and temp wire it into the ecu lead with a diode to prevent back feed ) , so you can pull the main battery lead and not wipe the memory on the ecu , try to disconnect the lead to the car wiring system as if you( or the inspector ) key it it will kill the little battery and still have the same effects as disconecting the main battery
My GM system will have to relearn if you leave it disconnected for awhile. I use a battery cut off with a lead tied to the battery that bypasses the cutoff.
What will happen when you have to replace the battery? It surely will re-learn upon starting. I do agree with the Hotronics kill switch and have one in each of my cars, including my 40 with EFI. The bypass keeps ECU powered. You may not have time to get and install one, I can't imagine you can't just disconnect the battery. Of course I won't be there Sunday night to help.
more and more shows are now requiring the battery to physically/mechanically be disconnected at the battery ( not just thru a kill switch ) and the hottronics switch will not do you any good in that case . pretty soon it looks like your going to have to drop the fuel tank and take the battery out because of the insurance .
The building where our local World of Wheels show is held requires that each car has less than 1/4 tank of gas. I'm guessing that stimpy's "drop the fuel tank" was a jest based on a similar requirement somewhere he's been.
All good ideas and I hope to figure something out by next Thursday. I think this will be my last show on the inside.
The Inglese tech line told me not to worry. Disconnect the battery and reconnect when leaving the show. Everything should work fine. I will try this at home to make sure. Thanks again for all the advice.
Welcome to the "show world" , one time was enough for me . I'm sure everything will work out and that you'll have a great time .
Here is the problem solver purchased at PeP Boys. Cheap and they say does the job. I have AAA on standby. Plugs into cigarette lighter and back feeds to computer. Hope it works. Under the fender but accessible by removing three nuts.
Good luck at the show-did a few indoor shows over the years-now just go to the outside show area at Sac Autorama-much less hassle and more relaxed. Indoor shows require being there every day in the am to dust etc-and still get dust after a few hrs.
I know some of the guys who do later O/T model stuff always down loaded there tunes on a back up disc or dongle and carried a laptop with the tuning program and hook up cable with them when they fetched the car incase the computer dropped the program . they would hook up the battery and reload it in a few minutes and go .
