what to do about a fat ass (46 Ply)

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Mike Landwehr, Jan 27, 2006.

  1. the Lander post ***le got me to thinking (oh oh ):D , don't get me wrong I love my new to me 46 Ply but... I hate the 49-52 look of the rear fenders , just seems to much of a clash between a 40's car and a 50's car to me , ya think I should hide em w a set of skirts ,keeping in mind that I am not a taildragger type or radius em ala 40's ford/chevy? ,LOL,NO! I am NOT going to sell it over this issue

You could start by removing that shelf above the bumper.

    Perhaps the ramchargers route? :D

  4. plan to do something about that rear bumper, prolly sell the Brizzes as i got rechromed stockers w the car,I have a pr of 49 ply bumpers as shown on the RC car, maybe go that route, and replace the stock filler, I love that old ramchargers car, but thats a bit TOO much radius to be even legal  :D heh heh

What part of her fat *** are you referin too?

How wide or how tall or how long?

  6. its the RR fender wheel opening i don't like, pretty much a skirt or radius question as they are molded in ,

What's the theme of the car going to be? Street racer? Then radius 'em. Mild custom/hopped up stocker? Skirts.

I'd always go for skirts, but I'm a lowrider/taildragger kinda guy. If you're building something fast, consider getting a set of junk front fenders, cutting out the opening, and grafting it into the car's rear fenders. Then the front will match the rear. Nothing looks worse (IMHO) than a rear fender cutout that's perfectly round when the front fender opening is squared off or differently shaped. Looks like someone cut the rust out of the rear quarter using a barrel lid as a pattern.

  9. Mike,
What are you after? Kustom (like in I owned 7 plymouths and kust'em all) or Street Brawler (like in see that red light up there sonny?)?

What you might do if not a radius job is cut the fender lip out and lower it some. That way you don't end up with a fender skirt but you have altered the wheel opening to arrive at something different. probably a bad idea over the radius route, but you know me I'm a little off center.

  10. yep street racer,:D ya know- five spokes- either w the WWW (probably not) or pinner WW + 26" cheaters, gear drive ,tire rake etc. I like the front wheel well top back idea , I know of some ratty ones w good openings :D

I've seen a few that are radiused and I starting to like the look. The plymouth my cousin got of 50dodge4x4 has the rear fenders done it looks pretty good. Heres the photoshop pic of the it.

That looks sweet. I removed the pan on my 40 Plymouth and pulled the bumpers about 1.5 inch from the body. cleaned up the look alot

Ya man, it didn't look like that when it left here, is that the plan for it? Looks great that way.

We did loose the bumper filler on both ends of the 47 and pulled the bumpers in 2" or 3", the rear bumper was almost against the trunk lid. Be fore warned, I know we "trimmed" the bumper edges on the front so we didn't get into the wheel, and we may have trimmed the rear just a touch. might be kind of a problem with already rechromed bumpers.
On the rear fenders, I cut the original lip (and a couple inches extra) out of the fender and raised it about 3", and rewelded it back in and built back in the corners so it looked pretty much stock. We raised the lip just enough so the fender lip cleared the rear tire. I have a closeup of the rear fender, unfortunately, the picture was taken after we repainted the fender, with out filler. Just a suggestion, but what if you do some custom work and extend the sides a few inches further back for sort of the kind of look that the '49 chevy by drag n shop did but do not slope it to the ground. just an idea. I dont know how it would look.

If you're gonna lower it, I'd do that first before you decide. Here's what my 49 looked like after I lowered it 3 inches.

    Skirts will make the fenders look bigger try this;

Take 6" out and you won't notice those fat *** fenders or that too tall roof!

What year is that sedan, J53? I've been thinking about chopping my coupe for about 5 years. Maybe I'll finally pull the trigger this year!:D

IMO. the best part of that car is the fat ***. don't touch a thing. If you don't think the front and rear go together, fix the front.

  24. One thing is how your coupe is chopped- it has been lengthened using two roofs a practice long used that in effect lenthens the qtr gl***- leaning the rear gl*** steeper and using on roof ends up like this coupe.........
sorry its dated but I did this Plymouth in '86......20 yrs ago is a long while-.

here ya go-I pulled the bumpers in close..... pitch the HL trims-frenched headlites-filled top grille bar- welded rear fenders on-deseamed it all over- and shortened trim back to about 1/2 length[on hood sides].

    Mike,
Wondering what the powertrain is ... or did I miss it ? I tend to agree with squablow if the car is going to look early '50s - how about dropping the whole car about a foot, add fadeaway fenders with shortened '48-'50 Cad 1/4s ... narrowed Cad bumper, '51 Ford truck grille chromed, frenched headlights w/ plain rings ... fill all the holes and round all the corners. Oh, don't forget to cut all the clips off your front hubcaps & screw 'em on the spindles with blue wheel well lights !
Nice Plymouth, by the way ! Those '46-'48s are built to last ...

Heres gl***hole plymouth. I think the ride height has alot to do with the way rear fenders looks. Clark did the Old grill for him awhile back it really works on this car.

It's a '50 minus 5 /12" at the windshield and 6" in the back. I agree with OldGuy, it's not the rear fenders that makes these ugly, it's that roof, it's waaay too tall. Take a look at the one choprods did, it's beautifull with a shorter roof and he didn't change the rear fenders at all. I never considered how fat they were until I took this shot- I don't think it's ever looked better!

Mike, if you decide to sell those bumpersI'd like a chance at 'em. Thats a very straight, solid looking body; gonna look killer when you're done! I agree with Stratostreak about losing that shelf above the bumper , then moving the bumper in close, just my opinion!

42 rear fenders will bolt on and have the full radius look of the 40/41. Those had external running boards so their fenders while probably fitting won't fit the later lower body flair.
