Need some wheel help and info

Discussion in 'Traditional Customs' started by CHUCK50DODGE, Jan 20, 2015.

  1. Hey fellas I am in the process of refreshing my 1950 Dodge Wayfarer business coupe and I am wanting to switch up my wheels. My question is what kind of wheels do I need if I wanna run lancers or fiesta style caps. I want to run 15" wheels. It currently has 14"smoothies on it.

Also are lancers and such full cover caps? I am pretty much a novice when it comes to wheels and tires and that is a big part of the overall look of the car in my opinion.

Sorry for being all over the place but if anyone has info and sources on the wheels I'm after it would be greatly appreciated.

If you did that chop, you're no novice, hombre. Sweet looking start. I've never seen a three-window MoPar like that. And, yes, to the best of my knowledge Lancers are full coverage wheel covers. As to rims, I need to dig into the 'black book' I've collected data in to know what the Dodge lug pattern size is, but you should be able to mix-'n-match any set of wheels that will fit over your drums and allow the use of those particular covers. I'd take one with me when tracking rims down and see if it'd fit. Dodge on Dodge is a cool idea, especially when you consider how bitchin' Lancers look. I don't know but aren't those available from Night Prowlers?

  3. Thanks for the info, yeah I was thinking that I should be running lancers to keep it all dodge looking. Thanks for the kind words on my Dodge.

Nice looking Coupe. Which 'Lancers' do you have in mind? The '55/'56 Lancers
are 15"....they are the version with relatively short 4 bars and a blue & white center
plastic insert. The '57/'58 Lancers are 14" and have longer bars and a an armored
Knight's ( a Lancer) head emblem in the center.

Now, given that '55 Dodge wheels were fitted with the Lancers, 15" wheels from any
'55/'56 Plymouth, Dodge, Desoto or Chrysler should work just fine. Later 15" wheels,
such as '70s and '80s full size Mopars (and some pickups) also are good choices and
may be easier to find. The '57 model Mopars generally had 14" wheels, as did many other
    American cars of that period.

Your Mopar has a 5 x 4.5" wheel bolt pattern which is also shared with many Fords as
well as American Motors, Studebaker and a few others. So, you have a number of potential
sources of used wheels and several sources of new wheels, should you decide to go that
    route.

Lastly, the above information 're the Lancers is in reference to factory original wheel covers.
All the popular flipper style covers were make in look-a-like aftermarket versions and came
in at least 14" and 15" sizes for all types.

That is by far the best treatment I have ever seen of one of those cars.

That is a beautiful custom. Great chop and great stance. Is there a build threat?

So you are saying this car runs 15 inch steelies from stock? And is fairly low backpacking, and 5x4.5?

Did they come with 16x5 steelies stock!
I want to find 16 inch rims for my Volvo, and want them to be old.

    Sorry for the tread jacking.

I'm pretty sure repro Lancer caps are available to fit pretty much any diameter rim these days.
I seem to think Moon had them advertised.

@Hnstray Nice mention on the 55/56 Lancers. You don't see them that often but they make for great caps! +1

Fiestas of course look great - either the 53-55 or 56 variety, but be sure to check on your rim depth. I know the 53-55 ones don't directly fit on early Chevy rims. Where you're looking for rims though you could solve that easily enough.

  10. The Lancers are a full wheel cover and about any stock steel wheel the correct diameter for your hub caps (wheel covers) will work. The stock wheels on that car should be 5 on 4.5 if I recall so about any mopar or ford 5 lug steely should do just fine.

  11. I'll say.. most of the unchopped look like the old Fotomat kiosks in mall parking lots...

  12. I agree 100% this was a huge challenge to take on, make this "ugly" car into a kick ass Kustom. To show that almost anything can be transformed into a Gem, and not to overlook any ride when looking for a new project.

  13. Here is an update on the wheel situation, in trying to do something else I went ahead and switched to some 57 lancers and I like them. But I am probably gonna still get some caddi caps or even some 59 lancers as well to switch them up every so often. I also got my seat upholstered and am debating on what to do with the floor. ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1426050617.732130.jpg ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1426050643.284422.jpg

Cool Ride - for ideas, and deals, search the Vendors section here Wheel Vintiques, Night Prowlers, etc.
also, not too far from you is Pete Paulsen's House of Wheels - site is good to get ideas for caps, etc

  15. Thanks, will definitely have to check the House of Wheels out.

  16. I like the fiesta ( I think) caps with the little checkers on them. Just another idea to ad to your worries.

It is a nice old coupe by the way, pretty smooth for a 3 window Dodge.

Just to pick nits, the Lancers you have are '58 style, not '57. Now...just a minute, before you howl that I am mistaken. The '57 and '58 Lancers were the same wheel cover EXCEPT for the background color in the center circle. The '57s were light colored, the '58s had a black background. :)

That is true, although I've seen them marked as "'57 Lancer style" more than once.
They look good on your car, match the build style, and they are even brand-appropriate. I say keep'em on there!

  20. any full hubcap will look much nicer if you paint your wheels..dark color like the body..that pissy ivory make your witewalls look like gansta tires (very wide whitewall)

  21. I'm liking your coupe too. Nice choice on keeping the wheel covers Dodge as well as traditional! You asked about what to do with the floor - if you mean covering, my thoughts would be a green darker than the upholstery and in a loop style to carry on the traditional feel of your custom. There, problem solved! :D

  22. I thought the same thing but I figured that I was wrong due to all the places advertising them as '57. Either way I like em and they will be on the car for a while. I like the 59 lancers as well.

  23. On a side note it looks like we will be in the spray booth this weekend so hopefully I will have some pics to post up of a freshly painted Lucille.
