There is a nice set of original Halibrand wheels from the mid 60s on ebay. Auction appears to end tonight. The ad says fits Fords and Studebakers. Did they have the same bolt pattern? Thanks http://www.ebay.com/itm/Halibrand-M..._Car_Truck_Wheels&hash=item4ae394a0e1&vxp=mtr
I would ***ume that they are pretty rare, but I personally don't find them very attractive. And who in their right mind would powder coat a magnesium wheel! Seems like it would diminish the value.
Called "Star Mags". Halibrand came up with them in about '61 0r '62 or so as a project for Studebaker as they tried to turn up the heat on their Lark series cars. In Hot Rod about that time they road tested a Lark with a blower and these mags. I don't believe they ever were a factory kinda deal, but I have seen these on Fords of the era too, most notably the first V8 Falcons in '63 and Thunderbirds. Even more bazar, I know of a Volvo P1800 here in Phoenix that has a set of these intact just sitting in a parking lot. Been trying to trade the owner out of them for many years...
yes Studebaker offered them.....have a road test from a mag showing them installed on a Daytona....kinda what I would hope to get for my little <<<<< Studie....some day.....
Sold for $5999.00. Bet they got powder coated to cover up the fact that they were a corroded mess beforehand. Low temp powder and a can of aluminum epoxy can hide a lot of ugly.
That would be my concern, that they could be too badly deteriorated to use, and powdercoat could conceal that. Saw those wheels in a '64 magazine on an R4 Lark convert that had been heavily breathed on. It may have been from the big Bonneville record bash.
