I'm working on my 54 Ford Customline and it's missing the speed-ometer needle and odometer dial. does anyone have a cluster laying around the shop they'd be willing to part with? willing to take parts or the whole cluster. thanks for any help
if he hasn't got one, try Temple's in Lexington, they have a ****load of shoeboxes to pick through. Verbe is great on prices, too. good guys there. walking their yard is a trip to a museum.
I will check through my parts when I get home,at one time I had a extra '54 Astrodome for spare parts.. HRP
HRP, Do you know if that cluster still has all the internals. Im asking because this last summer I hooked up my speedo cable and it worked great. Then it started making some noise and got progressively louder. Then it finally stopped making noise, but also stopped working. Wondering if I would be able to take some parts out of this cluster to fix mine. Thanks!
Bagg's reach up under your dash and unscrew the speedometer cable,it sounds like you many need to grease the cable. It's possible you might have a problem with the speedo but it's rare they just quit working. HRP
Back in the 50's when the speedometer started making noise and they quit working! That meant you needed a new cable because the old one just BROKE!
True, but not always,I have found a few that the knurled part of the cable was not tight and started making noise and then quit. If the cable is broke the speedometer head is usually the culprit. HRP
here's a complete head on Ebay http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-195...Parts_Accessories&hash=item3a99542124&vxp=mtr
Mine makes a terrible noise when hooked up, like its gonna blow up any moment, rattling inside the speedo. It counts the km diven but not the speed. Its not hooked right now.
The old grease inside the cable can get caked and hard, take the cable out and clean it and put fresh grease or light machine oil in it. HRP
Not sure this would work for a speedo cable, but I don't see why not. 3M makes a teflon lubricant that I have used on my shifter and throttle cables. It's a teflon "powder" suspended in alcohol. You shake the bottle up until all the teflon is suspended then hang the cable and drip it thru. after the alcohol evaporates, just the teflon is left behind. A '57 friend suggested it to me, and it worked great..my cable shifter went from a little stiff to smooth as silk. It can be had at Lowe's...in the tool department..on a main aisle end rack in all Lowe's I've been in.
Just checked in to the forum for the 1st time in ages. I have 3 full clusters sitting on my shelf if you want the entire cluster. I can get pics in the morning if you'd like.
The cable I have is a brand new one as of last summer. The noise started light then progressivly got louder and louder until it stopped working and the noise went away. Im pretty sure the cable is fine. Im thinking its the cluster, or whatever gears or parts are inside. I would like to keep my cluster as its in great shape and still shows the original 45000 miles.
I would imagine that somewhere in the Twin Cities there would be a speedometer shop that's been around a while you could take it to,these older speedometers seem to make more noise when it gets colder something that is normal for Minnesota which is why I now call Arizona home. But I still have a bucket list wish,I want a Carbone's pizza and a six pack of Grain Belt to wash it down.
hello do you still have any of the speedo clusters for a 55 customline if you what would you take for one
