I was wondering if anybody could give me some ideas on how to get a ***le on this car I got. I got the car "free" from a repair shop just down the street from where I work. The story is that this old guy had the car towed to the repair shop after it was recovered from being stolen. The engine appeared to be seized. The shop told him how expensive it would be to repair it, so the old guy told them he didn't want it & to just get rid of it. I happened to ask about the car & the shop told me to come get if I want it. Now the hard part. The old guy doesn't have the ***le. He sold it to his son... his son sold it to somebody else,it was stolen, or abandoned, nobody knows where the ***le is, & the old guy is not interested in getting it. He's washed his hands of the car. The car was licensed last year cuz it's got current plates & tags. I can use the car for parts because I've got a 67 Ford wagon. From the front doors forward, it's the same. But I'd like to turn the car into my daily driver. The car's in really good shape in general. Any ideas???
Chances are the ***le might still be in the old guys name. Check with the DMV and if it is have him apply for a "lost ***le" and then when he gets it have him sign it over to you. Pay for all the fee's that way only thing he will have to do is sign his name on the paperwork. That would be the easiest and probably cheapest way to do it. Bill
The DMV is probably your best way to get this done unless you know a friendly police officer who would call the numbers in for you. Then just contact the last registered owner and get it signed over. Make sure you don't do any work to fix it up till you have a clear ***le. A kid I knew worked on an old 40s tudor for a couple of years and then contacted the last owner on record to see about getting a ***le. The last owner shows up and tells him the car had been stolen and he's come to get it . My friend ****ped his pants while his dad was yelling at him "I told you to check on the ***le first". Then the old owner chuckled and said it was never stolen and he'd sign the paperwork, but you might want to check on the ***le stuff before spendng all that time and money on another old car. Lesson learned. Nik
Yeah, I'm not going to make any repairs to it. I think the ***le is still in the old guys name, but he has no interest in helping out to get the ***le. I'm gonna try to offer him a $100 to get a copy & sign it over, but what I was told by the people at the repair shop was he really didn't want anything to do with it. I might just have to accept it's a parts car.
Yeah, but I have no bill of sale or anything. As far as the DMV is concerned, I could have stolen the car. That's part of the problem. I have absolutely no paper work on it....no registration....nuthin'.
i think you missed the advice that was given to you just because you don't have a ***le, doesn't mean it isn't ***led..if it was driving last year it probabilly is ***led ok , the car was regisistered at one time...correct? the car does have a VIN nunber...correct? is there a license plate on the car? take the VIN number and the plate number to your DMV and see if it is registered in someone's name. if it is , get the paperwork to file for a LOST ***le take that form to the guy whose name it is in and have him sign it tell him since you have the car , and plan on driving it , it is in his best interest to get it out oh his name done it many times
DMV will tell you everything you need to get the this done. Get the paperwork from them to get a lost ***le, then bill of sale from him to you. They may require an affidavit stating that the vehicle was not driven recently. Then go to him and offer him money to sign everything. Don`t take the repair shop`s word for what he will and won`t do. I`ve done this many times also, some of them a lot worse than this( try doing this with dead people or ***les that were signed and notarized 50 years ago.) Fun, fun, fun
That's why you need to find out, because, yes, yes, yes, you might in fact be in posession of stolen property. Go to DMV, tell them you need to have the ***le "searched", give them the vin, and apply for the lost ***le. You can get it, it'll be in the name of whoever the last registered owner was. Then you have a name and address, the rest of the story is merely a little leg-work on your part. If it turns out the car was stolen follow your conscience, but I would call the cops, reporting that somebody tried to transfer stolen property to me.
Do you realize how sinister this could become? What if those plates and tags weren't registered to this car? And that car is found somewhere with a dead body in the trunk? I would never take posession of a car unless I got it with a bill of sale, with numbers, and signatures of witnesses! How do you know that the guy that 'gave' you the car isn't using you to clean up the crime-scene?
Thanks guys. I appreciate all the info. Someone else told me I could apply for an abandoned ***le, maybe.
