I put some carerra coil overs in the rear of my ch***is, and they came with 200# springs. (Im told). It was a speedway kit and I ordered them for a 1250# rear weight. anyway they say use a mounting height of 12 3/8". So I mounted them up and with the weight of the frame, and the body sitting on them, they dont get down to 12 3/8". They sit at about 14" and fully extended they are at 14 1/2". I dont see too much more wight being added other than a gas tank and battery in the back, so im thinking that I need to go with lighter springs. The engine and ****** arent mounted yet either(im not sure if this will affect the weight on the rear). Any one know the spring rate they used in somthing similar? Model A coupe, no fenders, 2x3 frame etc. I did mount them at 90 degrees. I know if I kick them in about 20 degrees I will get a little less spring rate. Is 200# ers too much?
200 is a BUNCH of spring for something that light. i have a pair of 100's on the back of my 2600# drag car. i used to run a 175 & a 200 on the back of my 3100# stock car that went into 18degree banking at 130 mph. try some 100's or 95's & get good shocks. your kidneys will love you for it...mel
I Used A Pair Those Carrera Kit Shocks On A T Bucket For A Customer....i Used A 130 Mounted At About A 15 Degree Angle ...and They Were Almost Too Soft....the Guy At Speedway Told Me They Rated The Springs A Little Heavy.....but 130's Were The Lightest I Could Get.....when I Did My Model A ...i Used A Pair Of The Short Qa1's ....and A 200 Was All I Could Get.....it Rode Good ....i Was Happy With The Ride...brandon
[I have a '29 coupe without fenders, sbc and auto trans. I have 180 lb. springs on All-american coil-overs. They are angled at about 20 degrees, they work fine. Having them angled reduces their effective weight but helps with stability. Even though the engine and trans are in front they do put some weight on the rear, too.
Get your engine and trans installed before worrying too much or making any changes. I was surprised how much weight the engine and trans transferred to the rear. Oh ****, this post is YEARS old; you're probably driving it by now. How'd it work out for you?
