Cool little hidden radio

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Justin Rousselot, Jan 30, 2015.

  1. Yup... And most of them also work with cheap and plentiful SD memory cards. ;) Lot of them also have a 3.5 mm jack to plug in your MP3 player or cell phone as well.

Very awesome option for a hidden stereo. Now I know how I'll have a modern set-up that's affordable in my Thunderbird. Thanks for the heads up!

  5. I almost jumped on this last night, but then I got to thinking, I'm still at the one-speaker stage. I'll have to work out where to install four speakers and get them wired, before I can consider any kind of new head unit. :(

55Caddy62 - I have mine hooked up to one speaker in my garage right now and it works pretty good

  7. Thanks for that, Justin. I'm kind of a stereo geek (since the 1970s . . . yeah, I'm an old phart) so I really want to get the 4 x 45W version and install four quality speakers into my old blue beauty. I just need to work with someone locally who won't butcher the old girl and will install them in a stylish and reliable manner.

  8. Just bought one off eBay for $19.99 delivered. Want one for my '51.
    Thanks for the info.

It is a cool radio to hide but when you hide it be sure air can circulate around it. Even though they are economically priced you don't want it to "die" before it's time. Note that the housing is all cooling fin. Amplifiers generate a lot of heat.

  12. The cars I had with stock radios I used to listen to AM too, cool oldie stations and radio theater (I liked the detective shows). But when I was left with only talk radio or radio Disney I had to stop (A few years ago).

If I put this in side the old radio would I need a cooling fan? Thanks, Jack

  14. If the radio case had lots of holes for air to circulate, you may be OK. Otherwise, you can buy small (2" square) 12 volt cooling fans from a computer supply place, or scrounge one from a busted computer/laptop. These units will shut down if they get too hot, but will start up again when they cool.

You can always get a 2-channel unit and a dual voice coil speaker for your single speaker location... get two channels of sound from one speaker. They are available in most sizes... here's a 4x10, for example.

This is what they look like now. There may not be room for the automobile antenna
