as I work on my chassis I'm deciding how to lower it. I want to stay as much model A as possible because of budget and parts availability. I am keeping the banger and mechanical brakes and without sourcing a bunch of 32 perches and stuff I think I'll get as low as I can in the front without a dropped axle. My coupe will sit pretty high. Maybe not even dropped in the back or a T spring. We'll see where the front comes in.

So pic request. Non dropped axles, no fenders 5-6 inch chop highboys with big and little bias plys.

    Thanks

Here's my roadster, it's as low as you can go without doing any frame work. It has a 40 rear and a 33 front axle. The frame is 7 1/2" longer then stock to accept the 40 rear spring behind. Removed a few leafs on the model a rear spring , and Front spring is a revirsed eye spring. image.jpg

This is the coupe my 19 yo son is building. Not exactly what you're looking for, as it has an undropped '32 axle, ( he's been robbing my stash )which has more drop than a model A axle. I show it to you so you can see how he got it down . It's a Doane Spencer inspired frame step and pinch, with the spring perches attached to the wishbone. It's been done many times before and works great.

    Rear tires are 7.50-16 ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1423419957.451150.jpg ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1423420028.686484.jpg , front tires are 600-16. Chop is only 3" ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1423419812.718314.jpg

I lowered my 29 A roadster buy heating the front and rear springs rdstr1.jpg like they did in the 30s. It was a rough ride but done the the way it was back long ago before dropped axles and reverse eye springs. I still ran mechanical brakes as well. Also did a rubber rake of 525x16 front and 750x16 rear.

I like original A axles but honestly, a dropped axle is probably the easiest and cheapest way to get it down. By the time you reverse a spring, flatten the crossmember, find a 33 axle etc. Then again... I like 'em high too.

got any pics of the heated rear spring? How much can you bend it and still use a spreader?

I would think that any other Ford axle other than a model A would be a dropped axle, no? All of them 32 and up will set the car lower.

Entlebucher, nice roadster, perfect ride height.

you could have your original A axle dropped for $200. chassis engineering sells reverse eye front springs for $45. the trick would be making those mechanical brakes work. pretty sure theres a tech on it...and a T spring outback.

  28. Just a friendly suggestion; Buy a couple Don Montgomery books and study them fervently - as you flip through the pages, look at the different styles, technologies, and time periods represented...find what you like and copy the details.

Most cars prior to WWII (1941 for us here in the States) used the 32-6 axle, 32-4 perches, reverse eye springs, and mechanical brakes. Dropped axles and juice brakes started showing up (together) just prior to the war. Honestly don't think I've ever seen a period photo of a "dropped axle" AND mechanical brakes...

  30. Recently guys have done it, I think just to prove you can. If I was going through all the trouble, I'd just put hydraulic brakes on it.
