I have a 41 ford and it has a 46-48 block and heads. runs ok. this is what I want to do to it, 4barel carb and manifold, change the gears to 354s. the issues that I can see are the carb not working well with the water hoses and alt and fuel pump. I was thinking of a autolite 4100 or holly 390. I am pulling out the motor to install new clutch and look at the motor, but it seems strong average 100 comp on cyls. any suggestions??? Thanks Mike
a four barrel (i run a holley) works great and you don't have to synchronize like with 2 deuces. the holley needs more fuel pressure than the stock carbs--supposedly the offy stock-type pump will work. i haven't tried it yet. i think you're right about the clearance problem with the center-outlet heads, but a spacer under the carb should cure that.
well I have been thinking about the carb situation and leaning more towards the 2deuces, only because of the linkage issues and the fit, I have been told that tow is easer than 3 carbs and not a lot of synchronize issues. with that said anyone want to chime in?? just trying to get the motor to wake up a bit and look cool!!
don't use three unless you have done some major improvements to engine two is no problem if you get a uni-syn and spend the time to jet them correctly you won't really wake it up without spending some cash HP=dollars
An Edelbrock Super intake manifold with two carbs would work great on your 59A flathead. You could also look at updating your ignition to electronic or Bubbas ignition (he is here on the HAMB as GMC Bubba). Updating your ignition would greatly improve performance. Three deuce carbs are too much for street use. Your flathead will perform just fine with a 2 X 2 carb setup.
You can install three but only run two. Three carbs are too much for a stock flatty. Sounds like you have a really good engine at 100 lbs compression. Super duals are great intakes and provide great room for generators and fans.
If you're going to run two deuces, then you should think about a manifold like the Edelbrock Slingshot - gets the carbs out of the way of the generator and is one of the best performing 2-pot manifolds there is. If it was mine, I'd think about a bit stronger/better cam, simple headers and a better ignition. You can have a really peppy little flathead without too much fuss - just depends how far you want to go. If the engine has been around awhile, I'd pull the pan, clean it out, probably throw a new oil pump in it, etc.. Nice to get all the gaskets redone and know you have a solid oiling system - as you have the engine out, why not. I'd check the bearings while I was at it . . . I know - what started out simple . . . I've just added too! But, you'll pulling the engine anyway, if you have the time and $$$, it will be well spent. Dale
well from what i see on the forms about this issue i think i should look for a 4barl carb and maybe some heads and oil pump and call it good right now. i was thinking about a autolight 4100 carb?? maybe kind of net looking on there??
well i think leaving on the 94 carb. installing new heads offy400s. oil pump up grade to 8ba style with truck tube. new water pumps. and drive it!!
You could also use the 81A heads milled and a merc 4 bolt intake with a Rochester 2 g carb. These mods will help wake up that engine too. The Rochester 2g flows almost as much as 2 94s and you only have to tune 1 carb. The higher compression from the milled heads will aid in upping your torque. The stock distributor works well, but I myself prefer the 42 crab cap distributor. If you have anymore questions, please feel free to PM me directly. Matt
