You nailed it there, Gary! Sadly, I only got to see these cars in the magazines. By the time I started spectating, that era had passed...

Shots like this one that Tommy posted are still amazing. A car with seemingly no traction still making so much power that it could carry the front wheels to half track! It was at once shocking, confusing, outrageous, contradictory, impossible and frightening all at the same time!

Anybody know about this one? I thought I knew all the Gratiot Auto cars, but I have never seen this one.

 

And you wonder how they filled the stands back then. There's no throttle stops, air shifters or computers that drive the car for you!! It's just seat of the pants drag racing.
