I need a tank for my 34 pick up. I am not super keen on the stock style stock out behind the rear crossmember, and a tank in the box doesn't fit the bill either. (I want to be able to use the truck as a truck)! Any ideas?
The only thing left is a gas tank like a 32 pickup but I don't like the idea of sitting on a gas tank, that's why I mounted mine like a passenger car..out back. HRP
I haven't gotten to it yet, but I'm thinking about doing somehing in/under the floor of the bed towards the front of the bed above the frame rails if that makes sense. my bed is fabricated so I've got some creative leeway final depth and what not.If it works out I'm thinking about an early mustang tank. they're super cheap new and it do just food for thought. aso fyi I used an early 80's corvette tank in the truck in it's last incarnation. it was parallel sprung and the tank in roughtly the same as stock location but there was a big ass piece of square tubing between the frame rails at the rear that would have served as a "protective barrier" in the event of a wreck.
This was a thread I started on more or less the same topic. It might not give you any better answers but thought I'd pass it on anyway. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/whos-moved-a-32-truck-fuel-tank-outside-the-cab.626915/
Why not just run a stock tank in the back under the bed? You can get 'em new. Wouldn't it be simpler than re-inventing.
I built one under the bed behind the cab, between the rails. Squeezed 18 gallons out of it. Filler cap was in bed.
I feel you are over thinking things . If you are rear ended sure it may burst the tank but I think you will have more important thing to worry about as your head hits the rear cab. The best and easiest location is in the rear with the filler neck thru the lower deck panel behind the fender. Any where else creates lots of other issues, under the seat in my opinion is the least desirable for obvious reasons as well as loosing a valuable storage space.
I thought about this long and hard for model a pu... Like you I was also concerned about having the tank mounted in the rear of the truck, but more importantly I didn't want to be able to see the tank ... It's a peeve of mine to see parts hanging down below the body- Besides my truck sits pretty low, and didn't want any ground clearance issues. It's a full fendered 31 wide bed.. I ended up mounting the tank in front my bed- The tank is a tad narrower than the bed(50ish") and 6" wide, and 14" tall... With a baffle in the center. I had a local sheetmetal shop bend some 16 gauge up for me and I gas welded it together.. Used a universal sender, and mounted the fill on the drive side- Fabricated some straps up from 1/8"x1.5 flat stock , the saddles were made from some rectangular steel tubing I had laying around- The tank holds around 12 gallons, and looks like it belongs there, the stock bed Is 5' long.. So now I have 4' 6" of bed to work with... Plenty of room, and I use my truck as a truck all the time! I can take some pics for ya is ya wanna see some details- Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
This is what I used in my 29 Roadster. Fits between the frame rails and is nice and flat, holds 15 gallons. Mine takes up most of the trunk but you should be able to get it below the bed floor and access it from the top. Got it from Yogi's in Iowa ( Tanks Inc ) It's a 64-67 Mustang tank. $215.00, you could put the filler cap in the bed or out the back.
Not an endorsement of any company but this is very similar to what is in my '32. Used dog-dish style pan and short filler neck in bed as filler. Sits between frame rails behind axle. Had to use impedance gas gauge sender because of foam fill. http://www.speedwaymotors.com/JAZ-Products-200-016-NF-Polyethylene-Fuel-Cell-16-Gallon,33623.html
When I bought my truck years ago…. it had a 57 Courier tank between the rails, behind the rear diff.Worked good, but small.
I found a 34 passenger tank. I will see if I can make a filler of some sort work that is outside the box but still not hanging off the side of the box. Running fenderless so it may be a bit of a challenge. I don't want it in the box floor if I can avoid it.
