Hey Gang I have a 32 3 window that was built in the 70's the tires are horrible. I'm going to a 16" Ford type wheel for now and wanted to know what looks good besides Bias ply. Coker cl***ics look like bias ply tires but has anybody on here have them? My father is 70 and will be driving the car from time to time and is totally againt Bias ply. I need something that looks right. Anything available out there.
I ran them for two years before I sold my car.....was TOTALLY happy with their *looks* and handling........best of both worlds....the look pretty much like bias plies but with the ride and handling of radials! A VERY satisfied customer! CB
I'm thinking about the radials ,will need tires for next summer,I really like the tread design on the Excelsiors, but hate how they have that great big RADIAL written on the sidewall. What about the Cokers,do they have that too?
I am running them on my roadster, took a while to get good balance but fine now. Ditto Hot Rod Pro on tire pressure. I run 42lbs
Why do you have to run so much air pressure? I'm running stones right now at 30 lbs,and thinking about running less pressure, because they are wearing in the middle. Any thoughts as to what is the correct pressure on a bias for even tread wear?
Holly ****. 40-42psi!!? Do yourself a favor, try 26psi in the front and 22psi in the rear, you won't believe the ride improvement. And don't worry about tire wear, they will last longer than you care to look at them. Really.
I run 20 psi in the elcheap-o Cooper radials on my truck. It weighs 2800+ lbs. Rides very nice. Wears even. Some time ago there was a thread here that discussed air pressures versus tire load ratings and one very smart Hambr detailed the whole process of calculating tire pressure based on the tire's load rating and the measured load on each wheel. Sorry to say I can't find it right now but I can tell you that I'm actually running a little more psi than the formula calculated, being a little chicken at first to try pressures that low. If I can find the thread I'll post a link later. Gary
I could literally run no pressure in my 7:00 _ 16 Stones from Coker I don't of course but they are stiff enough. I run about20 rears and 22 fronts. This is on a T. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Gary, thanks for the comments, I'd like to see that formula, that would be interesting. I've just learned the advantages of lower air pressure from experimenting. I have '32 5 window, I was considering removing a leaf or two in the rear. I decided to lower pressure first, ...the ride is WAY improved at 20 psi, cold ( it increases to about 23 hot). derb
Guys, In my response above, I failed to state my '32 weighs 2600 lbs (with fuel) and the tires are Excelsior 500-16 and 750-16.
We have done 6000 Mls so far in 4yrs on 750x16 and 550x16 Coker cl***ics . 30lb air , rides a little hard but that maybe a combo of springs old rota flo shocks etc. Every rod run , the people we go with are impressed how the old bias plus handle. (I don't have the heart to say otherwise and spoil the illusion)
VERY Nice 3 window! ...just once, try reducing the rear psi to about 22 psi. I think you will be amazed.
Sorry to say I had no luck searching for it. Hopefully, the guy who posted it will see this thread and reply. As I recall (getting old, I am) he was in the tire business so I was not only interested and impressed with his info, but it really had me wondering why info like that isn't more readily available. Gary
I use the same combo as kiwi, on a roadster, 26 front, 20 rear. So far, even wear. Up around 30+ psi you may as well have solid rubber.
Went for a drive this morning at 30psi so will lower pressure and go for a drive . I know a hot rod isn't necessarily built for comfort , but would like a little less jarring and keep the square sidewall look.
I'm a little confused. Some people are referring to radials. And some seem to be referring to the Firestone bias plys.
