yah - I know the risk I'm taking by asking the question, but:

I like to experiment with stuff.

Been noodling the idea of trying a NOS topshot out on the '55 after the 4bbl swappie is completed. A topsshot is a donut fogger that clides over the air cleaner stud and 'fogs' the nitrous/fuel mix into the carb - not unlike the throttle body injector systems used in the early 80's. the system runs about $500 over at Jeg's, and is a dirt-simple way to add 100 HP. Lucy will see a fair amount of Woodward time, and if you've ever been there, you know that there will be the opportunity to 'strut yer stuff' - and I'd like to show the fart-tip crowd that old iron can roll when it wants to.

the mechanics can be worked out with minimal difficulty; only real vehicle mods are a couple of holes punched in the air cleaner base to get the AN fittings up to the donut. Real clean install - If hardpipe is run down to the frame rail, the setup would 'look' factory to the uneducated eye.

Prob is, as I see it, is a 6V system does not generate as hot (or as reliable) a spark as a 12V system does. If I recall, 6V system have 17.5 KVA coils where 12V systems have 35 KVA coils (or hotter). I'd like to retain the dual-point distributor, and was considering a hotter coil to help prevent spark blowout. Misfires on a nitrous motor are bad things; depending on the fuel rate being dumped into the motor, the intake can be blown off - or worse!

So...Anybody have any experience in this area?

cant say i ahve any experience with your exact scenario..however i do have experience with hot coils and dual point distributors.i ran a ballast with a mallory dual, and a msd blaster 2 coil.bye bye points.the primary on the coil draws too much current for the points, and they will light up like a light bulb.also, the solenoids on the juice setup will be for 12 volt, and may not function normally.maybe run an auxilliary 12 volt batt for the juice and ignition??you'd have to charge it every run though,or run a small alt.

when I ask this sorta question - I've usually done some research in advance:

    a) MSD makes a conversion box which allows the upgrade to one of their e-ignition systems while retaining the 6V system.

    b) Pertronix makes a drop-in e-ignition for 6V.

    c) MSD has a coild with a higher step-up voltage than stock; I forget the specs. Oddly - it's a favorite with the antique tractor crowd. I guess if yer 6v tractor sits around a lot, you need the extra oomph to lite off stale gas.

The point on the points is a good one. I've farted around with changing voltages - you CAN adjust relay-type votage regulators, BTW - and the result is whatcha say...after a short while the point set looks like a mini Mt. Kilimanjaro with a biig buildup on one contact.

To offset the need for 12V on the solenoids, I can try to source 6V coils...or buy a step-up transformer to drive the coils at the 'correct' voltage. Ther are two companies offering step-ups that I've found so far.

soo...Looks like I'll hafta go to an e-ignition with a hotter coil.
